CHINESE and AMERICAN TREE PEONIES |
|
The peony showcased above is Black Panther (Saunders/1948, Early May, Fragrant, Semi-Double, 4'), a vivid, deep red tree peony from Brother's Herbs. This was its second year and it is beautiful. The petals are deep burgandy with a red hue, both velvety and satin. The reflection on the outer leaves make them appear dull, but they are not! I scanned this flower yesterday (5/12/2000) and it filled the scanner. I was sorry I had to cut it down and compress it for a reasonable web size! It's still big, but isn't it gorgeous?
Anna Marie, developed by Seidl/1984, Early May, Fragrant, Single). Tree peony to 4', described in Brother's catalogue (see sources page) as "Large soft lavender to orchid with dark burgandy flairs on a sturdy and rapid growing plant."
Anna Marie had its first bloom this year, and I got the picture just in time (before the storms). As I was taking it into the house (knowing I couldn't photograph it out in the wind), a true tempest started brewing. A few minutes later would have been too late.
Blue Sapphire, or "Lan Bao Shi," is "light pinkish blue rose shaped semi-double with dark flares, free blooming", according to Brothers Herbs and Peonies, where I purchased it.
I planted this tree peony, Paeony Suffruticosa Lavender, 3 years ago. Last year it presented its first breath-taking bloom, 9" across. It is 3' high now, and appears it will have at least 2 blooms this year.
For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life
And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love And to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving is a need and an ecstasy.
