CHINESE and AMERICAN TREE PEONIES

clear
The P.Rockii strains of Chinese tree peonies have, until now, been rather rare in the U.S. They are still very expensive, but you can find them more easily now. GoldenPort, Brothers, and Nature's Promise now carry them. (See the Sources page for more information.) This one is called Peace Lotus. It is characterized, like most of them, by a dark contrasting petal base, in this case, maroon on white.

Like so many of my fairly new Chinese tree peonies, this plant had only one bloom this year. The petals were blown off in a wind storm, and all I could salvage were two petals. At the top of the page is a butterfly I made from them. The flares are a gorgeous, deep maroon.

Bronze ComplexionThe Bronze Complexion tree peony gets to 5' tall, so it is one of those I planted in the peony bed. There, each plant will have full room to grow without competion. (Nor will their leaves touch each other, a great big no-no to some peony lovers). The Chinese name is GuTong. This flower bloomed its first time and I took a picture of it on 5/12/2000. I had expected the flower to be a paler yellow with maroon spot inside. However...it was a pale cream. Perhaps it will take more than one season to reach its true colors; or perhaps I just recieved the wrong peony!

Irridescent ButterflyIrridescent Butterfly, Chinese name Hua Hu Die, is a tree peony; mature size of 5' by 3'. It is described as deep purple inside, growing out to lavender, and fading to peach, pale pink and cream. I was not able to capture all the colors in this photo: and the flower changes its colors as it matures. This came from Brothers, who say it is of the P.rockii lineage. If you look very closely, you can see the deep purple flairs within. The flowers are full semi-double and 8" accross.

King of Black Flowers, Chinese name HeiHua Kui, is a deep maroon tree peony which grows to 3', producing flowers up to 7" accross. Mine has not yet bloomed.

Paeony Suffruticosa PinkPink Paeony Suffruticosa. This is another of the generic suffruticosas. I was very surprised to see it bloom its first year. The bloom was about 9" across, pastel, very ruffly.
