T. R. Smedberg Middle School and Sheldon High School are Elk
Grove Unified School District's newest secondary schools, opened
in August 1997. The schools operate jointly as a 7-12 seamless
educational facility. This 7-12 comprehensive school concept is the
first of its kind in the Elk Grove Unified School District, and we are
especially proud to be a part of the inception. The Smedberg/Sheldon
Educational complex is a beautiful campus which includes the district's first 750-seat Performing Arts Theatre located between the two
schools.
Staff, students and parents were part of a team that designed,
developed and implemented the school's mission: to empower students to meet standards of excellence which foster intellectual curiosity and to ready them to be responsible, productive, employable
citizens in a culturally diverse society.
Unique to the Elk Grove Unified School District, T. R. Smedberg
Middle School and Sheldon High School operate on an identical
4 x 4 bell schedule. Students take four classes per term, eight for an
academic year, allowing students to earn 80 additional units beyond
what students would earn in a traditional setting. The academies and
major programs offered at Sheldon High School provide middle and
high school students an opportunity to accelerate and focus their
learning within these academic areas at an earlier stage of their
academic career. The academies are Visual/Performing Arts, Building Trades/Engineering, and Political Science/Government. The majors are Science, Human Services, Technology, Communications, and
Fine Arts. To insure program effectiveness and increase student
academic achievement, the Assessment and Program Evaluation
Committee of T. R. Smedberg and Sheldon High schools will
complete a three-year internal assessment and evaluation of our block
schedule and 7-12th grade articulation process. The committee is
comprised of parents, students, teachers and administrators.
Reading is also a particular academic focus of the T. R. Smedberg
Middle School/Sheldon High School complex. Staff development in
instructional strategies for comprehension and fluency are part of the
five-year reading plan objectives.
We welcome your support and involvement at T. R. Smedberg
Middle School.
