Civilization II Tutorial - Part IV - The Modern Age

spaceship module

Overpopulation

In this era pollution may become a huge problem. We need to take action to prevent that from happening. Discover Mass Production (prerequisites Automobile and The Corporation) so that you will gain city improvement of Mass Transit and build it in every city that has grown over level 12.

However, Mass Transit only eliminates pollution caused by population. We will have to take further steps to eliminate pollution caused by production soon.

Food problems

If your cities have stopped growing or are running low on food, you will need to increase their food production. Discover Refrigeration and your Engineers will be able to double irrigate your land to Farmland, which increases food production of a city by 50 percent under one further condition: cities have to have Supermarkets.

Computers

Discover Computers as fast as you can and build SETI Program, which is one of the coolest wonders - it provides a Research Lab in every city. Research Lab increases city's science output by 50 percent.

After I built SETI Program, my scientists began to discover new technology every 3 turns at 40/60/0 tax rate.

Defense

Discover Labor Union in order to get the ultimate defensive unit - Mech. Inf. (Mechanized Infantry). You should have at least two Mech. Inf. units in every city. In addition, majority of your cities should have City Walls by now as we will be ready to go to war soon.

Alpine Troops are also a good defensive unit.

Production

We should continue to improve production. All cities have a Factory by now and as I built Hoover Dam wonder, they also have a Hydro Plant. I just discovered Robotics and will start building Manufacturing Plants in my cities. They will further improve production. There are other types of facilities for increasing production. Consult Civilopedia.

Cities

To give you an idea what an advanced city should be like around 1850 lets take a look at my St. Petersburg:

St. Petersburg has a population of 1,050,000 (level 14, I also have few cities that are larger). 1/14 of the citizens are happy, others content.

St. Petersburg supports one Engineers unit and two Mech. Inf. units. The Mech. Inf's are within the city defending it.

St. Petersburg has following city improvements: Barracks, Temple, Market Place, Library, City Walls, Aqueduct, Bank, University, Mass Transit, Colosseum, Factory, Power Plant, Stock Exchange, Sewer System, Supermarket, Superhighways and is currently building Manufacturing Plant.

St. Petersburg has also built Hanging Gardens, J. S. Bach's Cathedral, Darwin's Voyage and Women's Suffrage wonders.

St. Petersburg generates 8 units of food surplus, 51 units of trade, 50 coins, 76 science units and 49 production shields (3 are used for support) per turn.

Industrial Pollution

Pollution caused by shield production is the pain of the Modern Age. To start eliminating that pain, we have to discover Recycling and build Recycling Centers in our cities. But that will not completely eliminate industrial pollution. For that we have to discover Environmentalism and build Solar Plants.

War

I started war a bit earlier than I imagined, but I had to cause everybody started to steal technology from me. I will use Howitzers and Paratroopers most of the time for now and also Stealth Bombers and Fighters later.

I also threw two Nuclear Missiles and it's time to stop with them. I would risk global warming if I threw another.

Wonders

All modern wonders are important, but make sure you build at least Women's Suffrage, United Nations and SETI Program.

Fundamentalism

It's year 1889 A.D. and I just discovered last technology. I decided I will not be researching Future Technologies (though they bring points for your civilization score they don't bring no useful improvements) and will change my tax rate to 80/10/10.

As we said before, Democracy is not the best government system for military activities since units outside their home cities cause people to grow restless. That's why I am going to switch to Fundamentalism. Under Fundamentalism, no citizen is ever unhappy. Settlers eat only one food per turn (Engineers two) and only every unit beyond tenth unit uses one production shield per turn. The only downside of Fundamentalism is that science production is halved. But we're not going to research anything else anyway.

I'm off to crush my opponents now. I've already destroyed Germans and about 90 percent of the Carthaginians. Still have to beat Sioux.

End

It's year 1899 A.D. now and I just destroyed last civilization, the Sioux. That's the end of this tutorial, since the game is complete. Go to next page for statistics.

The tutorial concludes here. Check out the score and statistics.
