Championship Courses - The US Open
Collected on this page are the numerous host courses of the US Open. Historical notes are also provided.
Shinnecock Hills
The website here is to the 2004 US Open, but has the only web layout and hole overviews for Shinnecock Hills - hopefully it will stay on line. The course map is a bit stylized, but the hole layouts are nicely done. US Open historical info is also available on the site.
Design Notes: A version of Shinnecock Hills was created by jmwall24 (2004 version).
Historical Notes: Shinnecock Hills hosted the US Open in 2004 (Ratief Goosen), 1995 (Corey Pavin), 1986 (Ray Floyd), and 1896 (James Foulis).
Southern Hills
No course map, but hole overviews give decent 2D information. Photographs accompany each hole, and US Open yardages are listed.
Design Notes: A version of Southern Hills was created by Smak (2004 version), one of the finest real course recreators in the community.
Historical Notes: Southern Hills hosted the US Open in 2001 (Ratief Goosen), 1977 (Hubert Green), and 1958 (Tommy Bolt).
Pebble Beach
This website is from the AT&T tour stop and contains links to descriptions of Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Poppy Hills. The quality of presentation is a mixed bag. The hole overviews of Poppy hills are beautiful, including nice 3D views of green contours. Unforunately, only 5 holes are provided. The hole overviews for the other two courses are two small to give that level of detail, but there is one for every hole along with photos.
Design Notes: Pebble Beach comes with Tiger Woods 2004.
Historical Notes: Pebble Beach hosted the US Open in 2000 (Tiger Woods), 1992 (Tom Kite), 1982 (Tom Watson), and 1972 (Jack Nicklaus).
Pinehurst No. 2
Pinehurst No. 2 is a Donald Ross classic. The website, while a little hard to navigate, is a classic too. The course map is huge, and the hole layouts interact with a video to allow you to see many views of each hole. Good hole layouts as well.
Design Notes: Pinehurst No. 2 comes with Tiger Woods 2004.
Historical Notes: Pinehurst hosted the US Open in 1999 (Payne Stewart).
Oakland Hills
The Oakland Hills website is hard to navigate and only has static pictures of each hole.
Design Notes: A version of Oakland Hills was created by Mick Sutcliffe (2004 version), who is well known for his excellent real course renditions.
Historical Notes: Oakland Hills hosted the US Open in 1996 (Steve Jones), 1985 (Andy North), 1961 (Gene Littler), 1951 (Ben Hogan), 1937 (Ralph Guldahl), 1924 (Cyril Walker).
Hazeltine National Golf Club
The Hazeltine website is limited to text and a single photo per hole. It also isn't terribly easy to navigate.
Design Notes: This course was at one time under construction by SmokinJo, but he ran out of steam. He would likely be very interested in sharing what he's finished thus far.
Historical Notes: Hazeltine hosted the US Open in 1991 (Payne Stewart) and 1970 (Tony Jacklin).
Medinah No. 3
The Medinah website has an excellent course map and hole by hole description of all three courses. The hole overviews are large and detailed. Only green information and additional photography lacking. |
Design Notes: This is a current project of pickpocket32.
Historical Notes: Medinah No. 3 hosted the US Open in 1990 (Hale Irwin), 1975 (Lou Graham), and 1949 (Cary Middlecoff).
Oak Hill
Great course, but a lousy website. The website has no course layout information whatsoever. Lucky for us, Engguy has released what some have called a "flawless" version of this course for TW 2004. |
Design Notes: A version of Oak Hill was created by engguy (2004 version).
Historical Notes: Oak Hill hosted the US Open in 1989 (Curtis Strange), 1968 (Lee Trevino), and 1956 (Cary Middlecoff).
Merion Golf Club
Great course, but a lousy website. Lucky again, we have a rendition done despite these difficulties. |
Design Notes: A version of Merion was created by Hyno Designs (2004 version). Hynoski also released a later version with a smaller file size and some changes.
Historical Notes: Merion hosted the US Open in 1981 (David Graham), 1971 (Lee Trevino), 1950 (Ben Hogan), and 1931 (Olin Dutra).

Cherry Hills does not have an official website. |
Design Notes: A version of Cherry Hills was created by Hyno Designs (2004 version).
Historical Notes: Cherry Hills hosted the US Open in 1978 (Andy North), 1960 (Arnold Palmer), and 1938 (Ralph Guldahl).
Inverness Club
The website doesn't have much, but you can find a course layout and some random photos.. |
Design Notes: A version of Inverness Club was created by David Ryan (2003 version).
Historical Notes: Merion hosted the US Open in 1979 (Hale Irwin), 1957 (Dick Mayer), 1931 (Billy Burke), and 1920 (Edward Ray).
