![]() Paul Amoruso, Chief Executive Officer Paul was until recently the Chief Operating Officer of the Corporate Executive Board (Nasdaq:EXBD), a 600+ person company valued at over $1 billion, and estimated to achieve $100 million in revenues this year. The firm sells best practices research to over 1,600 firms in 35 countries. Paul directed a staff of over 350 people, had P&L accountability for all business units, and was a member of the executive team that spun off the firm into an IPO in 1999, achieved 35% CAGR in revenue and earnings and helped to triple the firm's market capitalization across 1999. Prior to the Corporate Executive Board, Paul had founded (and sold) a financial advisory and consulting startup and worked for Johnson & Johnson and J.P. Morgan. Paul received an MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business and a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University. Harish Devarajan, President and Founder Prior to ShockMarket, Harish defended a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University and did derivatives pricing at the London offices of Banque Paribas. In his early education, he was among the top graduates of his MIT class, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been among the top rankers at a few nationwide tests in India, including a National Mathematical Olympiad (top 20), an engineering entrance examination (34th of 80,000) and a National Standard Examination in Physics (gold medal from the President of India). Research Andreas Weigend, Chief Scientist Before joining ShockMarket, Andreas was an Associate Professor of Information Systems at New York University's Stern School of Business. He brings to ShockMarket nine years of scientific research, the last seven spent concurrently as full-time faculty and as independent consultant to Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Nikko Securities, UBS, Yahoo!, the CIA, and other institutions. He has published more than 100 scientific papers, some cited more than 250 times, and co-authored six books including Computational Finance (MIT Press, 2000), Decision Technologies for Financial Engineering (World Scientific, 1997), and Time Series Prediction (Addison-Wesley, 1994). His research integrates concepts and analytical tools from data mining, pattern recognition, modern statistics, and computational intelligence. He has received an IBM Partnership Award for his work on discovering trading styles, and co-chaired the sixth international conference on Computational Finance (CF99). Prior to NYU, he was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a postdoctoral researcher at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). Andreas received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Physics, and has studied at Cambridge University (U.K.), Bonn University and Karlsruhe University (Germany). Business Development Jacopo Lenzi, Director, Business Development Jacopo was an Associate at McKinsey & Company at San Francisco, Rome and London before ShockMarket. He has contributed to the McKinsey Quarterly and worked on Internet, hardware and telecommunication projects. He was among the best performing Financial Analysts at Lazard Frères & Co. before that, and helped with leveraged buyouts, initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Jacopo has an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford, was the Valedictorian and among the earliest graduates of his class at Columbia, and graduated summa cum laude with a joint degree in Economics and Operations Research. Ray Ying, Director, Business Development Ray was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company in New York. At McKinsey, he has led teams on a variety of financial services projects, helping clients in commercial banking, diversified financial services, insurance and investment banking. Prior to that, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Cooperative Society, and was a summer associate at the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell in New York. He was admitted to the New York State bar in 1997, received a J.D. cum laude from the Harvard Law School and a graduate degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a B.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and was a National Merit Scholar. Marketing George Bumeder, Director, Marketing & Business Development George was a Senior Associate at Booz·Allen & Hamilton, NY, in the Financial and Health Services Group. At Booz·Allen he lead teams helping clients with online and retail financial services strategies. Prior to that he was a Research Analyst, and then an Assistant Vice President at J.P. Morgan in Capital Markets Research, providing advisory services to large institutional investors on investment strategies and risk management. He obtained an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago, and graduated magna cum laude from Princeton with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Richard Yen, Marketing Manager Richard was most recently Vice President at Merrill Lynch’s Intelligent Technologies Division. Prior to that, he was Director of Software Development for D.E. Shaw Financial Technology until its March 1999 acquisition by Merrill. He was the primary developer responsible for designing and developing the UI for DESoFT's electronic brokerage Web site product. Fortune Magazine ranked one of his sites as one of the Top 25 business Web sites in 1997. He has acted in technical sales, consulting and liaison roles, and has led DESoFT’s front-end group. Richard has also worked at HP Labs and Sun Microsystems. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. Williams Burks Spencer, Marketing Analyst Burks was formerly founder of WhichDoctor.MD, a web-based community to help patients find the best doctors. Prior to that, Burks was an Associate with an incubator, Rare Medium Group, Inc. As part of this role, Burks identified and negotiated strategic partnerships for one of its portfolio companies, Live Universe, a provider of tools for webmasters. He also evaluated and screened business plans for capital investment. Burks has a Bachelors degree in East Asian Studies, with a concentration in Politics and Economics, from Princeton University. Technology David Michaels, Director, Technology David was most recently a Senior Engineer with the NetDynamics Business Unit of Sun Microsystems, designing core server infrastructure for the next-generation Web application server, a distributed system for the deployment of Web-based applications. He has experience with all aspects of the server and has implemented features for scalability, fault-tolerance, distributed load balancing, and performance. He has also worked at GeoCities, where he developed the company's first capability to insert advertising banners on its pages. Prior to that, he held several positions with the Lawrence Livermore National Labs working on distributed systems and the WWW. David holds a Bachelor's in Computer & Information Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a Master's in Computer Science from Stanford University, and was among the top graduates of his class in both schools. Paul Haefele, Senior Member of Technical Staff Paul was most recently the Product Lead for Summit Systems' Treasury Offering. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing new product functionality, technical design, management of the development team, and all aspects of the product's life cycle. Prior to that, he was Summit's Japanese Operations Manager, as part of which he established Summit's presence in the Japanese market. In this role, he was responsible for selling and globally implementing Summit's derivatives system at several leading Japanese financial institutions. Prior to Summit, Paul was a software engineer first at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and then at Industrial Bank of Japan International, both in London. Paul graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Science (Computer Science specialization) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and was among the top students in his class. Mariae Bui, Web Designer Prior to joining ShockMarket, Mariae has worked as a web designer for e-commerce and venture capital firms in the Bay Area. Mariae has received on-screen credit as a visual effects artist on a nationally televised special . She has also been Art Director on several independent films and documentaries, some of which have been acclaimed and screened at the Director's Guild of America. Mariae also led the art direction in a number of commercially released music videos. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and Film Production from Chapman University. Saksiri Tanphaichitr, Member of Technical Staff Saksiri most recently worked at the MIT Media Lab, where he investigated the use of server-side technologies in multimedia applications. He has also interned at several Boston-area firms ranging from startups to consulting firms. Prior to MIT, Saksiri held the top rank in Missouri in the College Board Advanced Placement Program (1995), was a National Merit Finalist, and received numerous awards from his high school. Saksiri received a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and two Bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and Chemical Engineering from MIT. Valentin Spitkovsky, Member of Technical Staff Val has worked in research groups at MIT, the College of William & Mary and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and interned at RSA Labs and Microsoft. Val is the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships and scholarships from the Hertz Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, Advanced Micro Devices, Microsoft, the State of Virginia, the Office of the President of the United States, faculty and course staff at MIT, and other institutions and groups. He has been among the top performers at the International Olympiad in Informatics, the USA Computing Olympiad, the International Computer Problem Solving Challenge and the MIT Algorithmic Programming Contest, and has contributed to peer-reviewed publications in Computational Biology and Computation Molecular Biology. Val was among the top graduates of his class at MIT in June 2000 when he completed his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, along with a triple major in Computer Science and Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, and a minor in Psychology. Administration Pamela Gartner, Administrative Manager Pamela has worked as an executive administrative assistant, office manager, contract administrator, customer service representative and salesperson at Sun Microsystems, Saratoga Institute, Zacson Corporation, Circadian Corporation and SEPRIL LLC. She currently helps part-time in the community as the Co-Area Coordinator for the Make-A-Wish(r) Foundation.
