Japanese "a.k.a." radios
cross-referenced index:
By "Japanese a.k.a. ('also-known-as') transistor radios," I obviously mean radios which share a lot in common, but this term isn't limited to the "look-alike radios" term often used by collectors. So along with radios sharing
same cabinet, with cosmetic variations at times , and often the same chassis -- but a different name, sometimes different model number as well
(e.g., Candle / Melodic / Realistic)
I would also add,
same name, model number, and chassis, but a different cabinet face.
(e.g., Linmark T-80s),
and,
one of a series of changes made on a particular model, with cabinet alterations often accompanied by chassis alterations
(e.g., Echos).
Also included in these listings, wherever possible, is the name of the radio's actual manufacturer...
(Some of the info for this section comes from an article of mine published in the September 1995 issue of Transistor Network, "Japanese Twins, Triplets, Quadruplets..."; some more comes from a conversation with Eric Wrobbel; some more comes from mfr/distributor/brand name indexes found in early '60s issues of Electronics World and Electronic Technician; some more from Norm Smith's book, Transistor Radios 1954-1968, © 1998 by Norman Smith; and the rest comes from whatever other tidbits I've picked up here & there since 1995. But all of this is still just the tip of the ol' a.k.a. iceberg...)
