Just who are these
darlings?
The
darlings have been
playing together in many different variations since 1993, but this
line-up only goes back to October of 1997. Started by Tim and Beitr
as a lark, the two of them, along with ex-drummer Jay Rajeck (of
TRS-80), started this incarnation in the fall of
'96. The darlings now consist of Tim Kelley (vocals, rhythm guitar),
J. Beitr Furman (bass, vocals), Jaison Chasko (guitar, vocals), Randy
Wilson (keys), and Mike Zelinko (skins). Tim and Beitr hail
originally from the St. Louis area, Jaison and Randy come from
"somewhere in Ohio", and Mike comes from Chicago. Coming together in
spite of their vast geographical differences (and past bands), the
boys all converged and became the darlings. Since that fateful day,
they have played many shows in Chicago and the Midwest, at venues
like Metro,
the Double Door, Thurston's, The Patio,
and Avalon (R.I.P)

What are they trying to
do?
Drawing on a vast amount of
influences and experience, the darlings mix early-era rock/pop
writing with noisy, heavy stomp. Mike honed his drumming skills in a
little band called Material Issue, Jaison and J. Beitr cut their
teeth in the Lupins, a heavy guitar pop band of some noteriety, and
then moved on to other projects (notably Jaison's involvement with
girly rock hero Liz Phair). Randy spent many years thanklessly
sweating it out as an engineer and project musician, while this is
Tim's first band. What happens when all of that comes together? Think
of it as if Buddy Holly's band was the Clash instead of the Crickets,
the Kinks were 20 years younger, and throw in a little Ziggy-Era
Bowie for good measure. Melodic, Heavy, Obsessive all apply.
What are they doing
now?

Right now, the darlings are
working on putting out a 7" inch on their own vanity label. A 3 song
demo was completed in early February, 1998. It was recorded at
Chicago Trax under the watchfull eye of ED. There are also few older
demo tapes floating around as well (see the Sound Page)
