Some thoughts on what to shoot.
Now you choose a subject. How
creative are you? How much time do you have? You could shoot
almost anything. I decided on clay, almost out of convenience. I
wanted a 3D sort of appearance, with shadows and all, and there's a toy store on
the way home from work. Clay is almost a whole separate hobby to deal with
though; easy to use, but tough to use well. (note skating Whiskey in
Sammy2). To get Sammy to "walk" in Sammy2, I used pieces of
toothpick to get his feet to come up off the ground. In some cases, I
used a "close-up double" to do facial shots.
I once made a clip of a roll of
masking tape spinning and unrolling. A Co-worker, Mark Cook, made a
nice clip out of several identical Beanie Babies. People have mentioned
using people as subjects... I thought about doing a clip shot straight
down at some jelly beans... Use your imagination. I've even seen a
stop-motion of pencil-drawn stick figures. It was scratchy and jumpy, but
it's an interesting look. (Remember those little movies in the corners of
paper-backs?) Don't be too afraid of loosing continuity. If your camera
moves or you don't remember exactly where something was, it's a good opportunity
for a new camera angle.
Oh, yeah... Go to the bathroom before you start shooting...
