Booking Q & A
All bands or
artists need to read this section before calling or e-mailing me. It
will
make things go a lot smoother. I hope the following helps answer any
questions you have. All of these questions I have heard at one point or
the other.
Q. What type of bands do you book to
GroundWork?
A. We book any kind of band. Any Genre, Any style. It
doesn't matter if you are a punk band from the NY, a country band that
only does covers or a metal band that has never played in front of
anyone before.
Q.
In order to get booked, should I send you a promo pack and demo?
A. Yes & No. Receiving a promo pack and demo always
helps things along. It
also helps in placing your band with similar bands. It is not required
though. If you have an MP3 that helps too.
Q. Do you pay bands? If so, how much?
A. Yes. We always pay bands. Each band that performs
earns 10% of the door. The reason behind our way of band earnings?
Reason # 1: Bands on the local level need to learn to promote
themselves like mad. Without this self promotion, the bands, most
of the time, will get nowhere. So the percentage pay pushes the
band to promote the show and pull more attendance in the door. Reason #
2: We don't have a bar. The door is GroundWork's only income. If we pay
bands like some places do, we would not be here.
Q. My KC band is really good. Will you give us a $100
guarantee? We need to get food and find a place to stay out there.
A. No. Your local with no label behind you. Get a
label, get popular, then we'll talk. On top of that, Leavenworth isn't
that far.
Q. What kind of advertising do you do?
A. We do standard handbill distribution to all area
schools, including colleges, handbills in local gas stations and public
places, internet advertising on various online event calendars and show
lists. We will be doing more print advertising (i.e. newspapers,
magazines) in Jan 2004.
Q. What kind of sound do you have? Should we
bring
our PA?
A. GroundWork provides full sound reinforcement to
accommodate almost any needs. We also provide an experienced sound tech
to make your band sound the best. So, No. Don't bring your PA.
Q. How long will our set be?
A. Standard sets are 45 minutes unless the booking dept.
tells you otherwise.
Q. My drummer's kit has triggers. Can you accommodate that?
A. Yes.
Q. My friends band wants to play with us. Can they?
A. Sure, as long as the bill for that night isn't full. I
will even let certain people plan a whole show if they do it well.
Q. On the calendar, my band is listed first. Does that mean
we are headlining?
A. No, it just means that your on the calendar.
Q. What is Sonofagun?
A. Pronounced: 'son-of-a-gun' Sonofagun Local
Music runs the production side of the coffee house. It is owned by the
same owner as GroundWork. Check out what they do here http://sonofagun.com
Q. What time do we have to be there if we are playing third?
A. I ask all
bands to be here by the time the doors are open to the public. It shows
respect to the bands playing before you. Don't be disrespectful. I also
don't pay until the end of the night, so all bands stay to watch the
others if they want to get paid.
Q.
Can we burn stuff on stage?
A. No dumb ass.
Q. Can we smoke on-stage?
A. No. Only in the back room or out front. Smoke damages
our sound equipment.
Q. I am over 21 and before my set I like to have a drink.
Is there a bar close?
A. Right next door. (they have cheap draws too)
The only thing is that it doesn't come into GroundWork and you don't
get sloshed. This is an All Ages place.
Q. Can the rest of my band and I bring a cooler of beer and
drink in the parking lot in back?
A. Absolutely not. If you want to drink in you vehicle, do
it in someone else's lot. Not ours. If I hear that you are... you don't
play.
Q. The bathroom is full. Can I piss out back?
A. No. Stupid.
Q. We are a band from CA that's playing tonight and we have
a few days layover on our tour here in the area. Where is a cheap motel
and a cheap place to eat?
A. We have a lot of friends with houses. Don't waste your
money on a room. We can find you a free place. If not, we will think of
something. As far as food, there is a few fast food places a mile up
the road that have dollar menus :) Also if you want to play at some
other places during your layover, I may be able to pull some strings at
other venues.
