Why Eat Healthy?

5 Reasons Not to Diet

1. Dieting doesn't work.
2. Dieting reduces self-esteem.
3. Dieting costs money.
4. Dieting zaps your energy.
5. Dieting kills.

Almost everybody seems to be on a diet these days. Even the girl who looks like a model is complaining about her thighs. Gosh, if she thinks her thighs are a problem, I better starve myself. Right? This is how most women think. A couple things wrong here: First, starving will not shrink your thighs. In fact, you lose muscle when you don't eat properly, which can lead to even more flab. Second, you can't starve forever. You'll have to start eating again, maybe after one day of attempting to starve. What's the point? Lastly, starving is dangerous, period. We tend to forget that food is the source of our energy. Unless you're going to lie around doing nothing the whole day, you are going to need a certain amount of calorie intake in order to function daily. Not eating for just one day will cause exhaustion, lack of motivation, crankiness, depression - in other words, you will not have the energy to live. And what can be more important than living?

     Eating Disorders

These days, girls are taking dieting to the extreme. One in a hundred girls keep starving themselves due to an intense fear of getting fat. This is actually an eating disorder called anorexia. Another "popular" eating disorder is bulimia. Unlike anorexics, bulimics do eat.
They eat uncontrollably, and then throw up right afterwards. Victims of these eating disorders are mostly teenage girls. They believe that their self-worth is measured by how thin they are. Friends will tell them how great they look after losing weight, unknowingly encouraging
the girls to keep on starving or bingeing/purging. 10% of them will end up dying - all because they thought they were too fat.

Sounds like it could never happen to you? It is frightening how many girls around me share the same thoughts as anorexics or bulimics: They are never satisfied with the way their bodies look. And even if you haven't gone to such extremes, you've probably tried a fad diet or two. You may triumph that you lost 5 pounds in a week after that - but it wasn't 5 pounds of fat, it was water. So after you stop the crash diet in a week and go back to eating normally, you will gain all of that weight back.

      Fad Diets

The Atkins Diet
Leader of the high-protein diet. Eliminate carbohydrates (grains), eat only meat & dairy products.
But such foods high in protein are usually high in saturated fat - heart disease, anyone?
Also, too much protein will overwork your kidneys, which may lead to permanent damage.
More side effects include headaches, fatigue, nausea, and bad breath.
Considering that the only weight you will lose from this diet is water, it's not worth it.

Liquid Diets
SlimFast shakes promise all the nutrients you need in one can, so you can substitue a meal for a shake.
You can lose weight, but once you go back to eating solid food, the weight will come back.
This diet destructs normally healthy eating habits, which may lead to excess weight gain after the diet.
Oh, and having a SlimFast shake as a side drink to your meal is not going to do anything.

One-food diet
Cabbage Soup, cherry tomatoes, grapefruit - pick one, and that's all you get to eat.
If you don't get sick of it in two days, then you will probably lose some weight.
But like all other fad diets, you are losing fluids, not fat. One-food diets are extremely harmful
because your body is missing out on many nutrients from other food groups.

Fad diets come and go, but their detrimental effects last for a long time. For example, even if you stop crash dieting, you may lose your period for several months afterwards. That is a serious signal that while you may feel fine outside, your system has gone haywire inside. Why are we making our poor bodies suffer? Enough of these negative body images! Your body is all you've got. It's about time that you realize that and start taking better care of your body. This begins with eating right. What are the benefits? It may be obvious, but let me remind you of some:

Why Develop Healthy Eating Habits?

A balanced diet gives you the energy you need for everyday life.
With added endurance, you can improve your physical performance.
Not only that, your mental performance will improve as well.
You will be in a better mood, feeling more optimistic and motivated.
Your immune system will go up, making you less prone to sickness.
From a balanced diet, a trimmer figure will naturally follow.
More bonuses appearance-wise include clear skin and shiny hair.

With all of these benefits you can get from a balanced diet, why does anyone bother starving themselves? "Dieting" for a week, and then go back to your regular meals of pepperoni pizza and Coke will make your health even worse than before. A balanced diet is one "diet" that you can, and should, maintain for the rest of your life. Start good eating habits now, and it will go a long way. It's not as hard as you think, if you have the right information. Now, you ask, what exactly is a balanced diet?
