We're planning to
create a "dictionary"
of necessary phrases together.
If you can help, email us
at jeetje@yahoo.com.
1. Don't bring too many clothes with you, because it's not vacation, so you'll be able to wash your clothes anytime you want.
2. Take at least 2 formal outfits with you, you never know what lies ahead.
3. Be prepared for the worse that can happen to you during the year. It means that you'd better not hoping too much from this exchange year. If you think like that, then you'll be very happy when you get more than you are expected.
4. Smile is the key of a successful Exchange year. People love smiles, even if you are in the middle of people whose language you hardly understand, if you think that they're making a joke, than smile with them , doesn't matter if you don't understand it. You can ask somebody to explain the joke to you later, but don't ruin the happy moment.
5. Bring music from home with you and listen to the music of your hostcountry. Music and dancing are universal. Aside from having fun with the music, listening to your hostcountry's music will help you lose your foreign accent.
6. As with 4, react to things, even though you may not understand exactly what's going on. Your expression will be your voice in the first few weeks.*
7. List the things you want to do that year, and try to realize it, as long as it's not against the rules you have to follow. Don't let the year flew away without plenty of great memories.
8. If you think the price of the film rolls cheaper in your native country than in your destination country, then take plenty of them in your suitcase. You'll be photographed as if you were a top model during that year.
9. Make a scrapbook and keep a diary of your experiences as an exchange student. That way, you can "visit" your hostcountry again and again when you return, without the costs of plane tickets.
10. If your native country has different language with your destination country, then try to learn the language before you left, it will make everything easier at first, and make a good first impression too, that prove that you are really interested to the country.
11. Don't buy anything you probably would buy if you were a tourist right away. Save the money for last.
12. Before you get your first photos developed, ask somebody where the cheapest place is.
13. Make sure you have photographs of those you love in your native country, take the ones you think you'd like to show them to the friends you'll make during that year.
14. If you ever refuse to go for a one year exchange at the last moment, you can always contact Kate and Diana through this website, and we'll be pleased to take over your flight, hostfamilies, etc, and go for another year exchange.
15. HAVE FUN!!!

* An exchange student taught me this important lesson at my district interview. Many thanks go to her for making my exchange experiences that much better.

If you have been an exchange student and have more tips to share, please write them on the message board or email us your tips.
