hit an iceberg and in 2 hours & 40 minutes it sank. Out of about 2,200 passengers, the liner
Carpathia picked up 705 survivors. About 1,500 people froze in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The Titanic was a British steamer of the White Star line, and the largest ship afloat in the
world. It was 882.5 feet (269 meters) long, 92.5 feet in extreme beadth, and 46,328 grosstons.
The Titanic was built for safty and comfort in Harland and Wolf ship yards in Belfast, Ireland
at a cost of about $10,000,000. It included:
7 grand staircases landings,
2 huge wrought iron and glass doomed skylights,
4 elevators, gymnasium, swimming pool, squashrachquet court, and
Turkish bath establishment. A hospital with an operating room,
library, post office, and 50 phone switchboards.
