Top My first outing My second outing ShowBoat The Kitty Bar A day out to Trigend Midsummer festival '2000 Back to main page |
The Kitty Bar. I must admit that it's not often I feel really good after an evening out. Either it is because I've done it so many other times before and I get bored, or that the events of the evening were just very ordinary. On this occasion, which started out with the monthly Seahorse Club meeting, some of us ended up afterwards at a nightclub called "Kitty Kitty Tomboy" located in Fitzroy at the corner of Gertrude St and Smith Street. The few of us who decided to go included Becca (short for Rebecca), Kate, Alexandra and Belinda. As we talked about the best way to get there, I sensed a growing anticipation in my mind about actually going to my first gay bar. Yep, I'm sorry but there's always a first time for everyone. Out of the four girls in the group, I have only met Belinda and Alexandra before this occasion at the usual club meetings. As for Becca and Kate, it was a pleasure to finally meet in person from what previously had been only email and chat via the melbgirl egroup. It was finally decided that I would follow Belinda in my car as I was not sure where this place was and I do not relish the thought of getting in by myself, unless I've been there before. As we drove towards the Kitty bar, my excitement grew as we got closer. We both found reasonable car parks around the corner from the venue, and after a final check on my warpaint, made our way on foot to the entrace. Belinda and I were greeted by a nice gentleman at the entrance, who welcomed us, and gave us a quick rundown of the place. As we were after the Kitty bar, he pointed us to the narrow flight of stairs at the end of the corridor. I do not remember clearly what the rest of the place looked like except for some dim but colourful lighting, as we hurriedly made our way through a few doorways and climbing up a flight of stairs. Memories of my younger disco days filled my immediate memory, as the thumping music echoed around the stairway got louder as we ascended and the smell of cigarette smoke filled my nostrils. My last outing to a club was probably during my college days, and it was somewhat comforting to know that nothing much has changed since those glory days. The first thing we noticed was that the place was packed. We also noticed that the other girls have not arrived yet. We decided to get ourselves some drinks at the bar and started looking around for a place to sit. We headed towards some spare seats in the other room where there was a dance floor. I noticed that there were 2 other seating booths in the room, but they were all full. The music was faily loud, and I could barely hear Belinda as we talked. The songs were mainly top 40 which you could dance to and the dj was doing a good job mixing the music. After about 15mins, Becca, Kate and Alexandra finally arrived. Belinda and I headed back to the bar where they were, and we settled around a table with just a couple of seats around it. Some of the girls had to contend with standing after getting their drinks as most of the seats have been taken. As Belinda and Alexandra headed off to the dance floor, Becca politely offered me to share her seat with her. Little did I know that we had a lot in common and we must have chatted for ages. It was good to finally meet Becca in person, as I have always admired her website while she was living overseas. As Becca went to the bar for drinks, I started chatting to Kate, and I had the opportunity to get to know her as well. I really did enjoy chatting, as it also allows me to understand my own situation, and compare experiences with them. In hindsight, perhaps I should have 'let my hair down' a bit more, and just dance the night away, but I'm someone who prefers to get to know people more, and I feel more comfortable around people I know. When I finally did have a breather, I noticed that it was close to 2am. Well, this cinderella was 2 hours late for home, and so, reluctantly, I bid the girls farewell and apologised for having to leave so early. As I made my way back to the car, a few guys walked past and said 'hello there baby'. I just smiled and continued walking, not wanting to let on too much. As I drove home and recalling the evening's events, I felt quite happy with the evening and hope to be able to join the girls out again on a future occasion. |
