Ftom Thomas Wictor we received this info
I wanted you to know about my new book In Cold Sweat: Interviews with Really Scary Musicians. It's a 301-page collection of uncut interviews with Gene Simmons of Kiss, Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order, Jerry Casale of Devo, and Scott Thunes. It has lots of previously unpublished photos and complete discographies too.
The reason I wanted to tell you about it is because the Scott Thunes interview takes up almost half the book and covers his role in the '88 band disaster as well as what it was like to play with Frank.
For excerpts, check out my Web site www.thomaswictor.com.
On September 27, Scott and I will be doing a signing at the Book Bay in San Francisco.

Hi! I’m thinking that it’s time to put out a new album, so we’re doing that in October. It’s called "Wooden Smoke," and it’s not much like anything I’ve done before. It’s primarily acoustic.

From www.vai.com.

The long-awaited Steve Vai box set represents nearly 5 years of focused preparation, and 21 years as a recording artist, for the Grammy Award-winning musician. "I remember when I was working with Frank Zappa, and he had a vault just filled with recorded material," says Vai. "He said it was a reflection of his desire to release everything he's ever recorded, and I just loved that idea – to attempt to release everything you've ever recorded, or at least all of the good stuff." For Vai, whose discography is more than 60 titles deep and includes work with artists like Frank Zappa, Joe Jackson, David Lee Roth, Public Image Limited, Alice Cooper, Chick Corea, Alcatrazz, and many more, the project looked like a very exciting endeavor, but hardly an easy task. "Through the years I've contributed a lot to various projects, so I thought it would be interesting to somehow pull them all together to create a comprehensive catalog of all the professional releases that have fallen outside of my solo albums. One thing led to another and soon the idea of putting it all out in a box started making the most sense. Next thing I knew, it looked like a 10-CD box set."

For Vai, who in just the past two years has released a double live CD Alive in an Ultra World, the new studio solo record The Ultra Zone, and an archives disc called The Seventh Song while he was also busy touring the world, finding the time that a project like the box set demands was not easy. "Every time I went to actually complete the box set and get it out, a project would come along that I couldn't pass up – mostly because the box project was very expensive and time consuming, and if I dedicated all of my time and energy to that, it would have jeopardized the flow of my solo albums and my ability to tour, etc. So it's been chipped away at, then put back on the shelf, then chipped away again, and now finally there's light at the end of the tunnel." The box is tentatively scheduled for release in October, and pre-orders should start in September.

There will be only 10000 box sets manufactured, and initially only 3 CDs will be available. The box will ship with three discs inside [The Elusive Light and Sound; Archives Vol. 2 – Original Recordings of Frank Zappa; and Alcatrazz Disturbing the Peace], with the remaining 7 CDs coming separately within the next couple of years. Only 10000 boxes will be made and all 10 of the CDs will fit into it, spelling out a secret word. There are various aspects of the design that fans will find very interesting and surprising, but we can't talk about all of those yet...

"borrowed" from the Idiot´s site
Apparently Gail is in the process of negotiating with Rhino Records in LA to sell off the unreleased part of Frank’s tape library…“what’s going on at www.zappa.com?” I hear you ask. Joe Travers tells me “The John Cage thing was supposed to go out live during the Holland Festival – over the Internet. Dweezil, Diva, Diva’s boyfriend, Paul (Moon’s Matchbox Twenty man), and myself were all involved.” And talking of Diva’s boyfriend, he’s in a band called SNMNMNM who (with 3 other bands) are now undertaking the Geek Rock Tour – the dates for which mysteriously appeared at the Z site last week (who told you they were for the Ike Willis Band!)…Diva continues to work on her ‘eclectic’ album featuring Lisa Loeb, actor Scott Wolf, Tipper Gore (on drums), and Tipper’s daughter, Kristen. Dweezil is writing the music for this masterpiece. “I want to make the best bad album ever made,” she says “It’s good music, and everyone else is great, and I suck! To tell the truth, I’m just doing this so I can spend more time with my brother.” Diva also appears in two new films: Play Dead (“It’s a gay necrophiliac love story, and I create the necrophilia.”) and Thank You, Good Night (as a fan of imaginary band, The Handy Kaufmans)…staying with the Z kids, Ahmet is presenting a new six-part series of Robotica (in which home-made robots battle each other in a fight to the death over three gruelling rounds) on Channel 5. It starts Saturday 14th July (17:55 to 18:50)…the Muffin Men are steadfastly refusing to deny rumours that a short British tour as a five piece (without Jimmy) will take place in September…

From an e mail service of Mike
LIVE NONKERTOMPF

While I'm out with G3 I'm going to be working on arrangements for the debut live performance of "Nonkertompf." This will take place at the Marathon festival in Holland, in October. I'm scoring it for eleven piece - a seven-piece BFD plus four Dutch musicians on reeds, violin, trombone and electronics. We're also hopeful that we'll be able to book some other European BFD dates surrounding that date. There's still a LOT of work to be done on this but we're very excited about getting the band out to those of you in Europe who have so long and so patiently for us to play there. Stay tuned for further details, and thank you all for reading this!!

[Scott here again. It's not ready to announce officially, but we're among friends, right? It's looking like Mike and BFD will make their long-awaited European debut at the Marathon festival in Groningen, Holland on October 19 and 20, 2001. This event is being produced by our good buddy and Euro-ally Co de Kloet at 4FM and we're jooping with anticipation! Mike and the band will headline each night, once performing the Nonkertompf Project and again playing a set as MK/BFD. Nothing's final yet, though, so please don't make solid travel plans until you hear more from us...]

All of the videos with the exception of "Does Humor Belong in Music?" were re-mastered to D2 (the highest quality professional digital video format) with various color corrections and enhancements. We are currently considering a laserdisc release as well as the VHS. We hope to have all these final versions available in the market place through BARFKO-SWILL by September of 2001.(as you have most likely noticed, this has not happened as yet, but we are making some more progress)

E-MUSIC: WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY
According to Gail Zappa, EMusic distributes songs of her husband Frank Zappa without her permission. This means EMusic does not respect copyrights. All this is mentioned by Reuters.
EMusic - that gives people unlimited access to their cattalogue for $10 a month - admits a limmited amount of FZ´s tracks was,in 1999, available through their site. EMusic claims they had payed Rykodisc, Zappa´s label. Also they claim they are negotiating with Zappa´s widow Gail.
Last year EMusic removed Zappa´s songs from their site
