"We now have a release date for QuAUDIOPHILIAc, the next DVD-A release from the ZFT. "It is scheduled for a street date of 14th September on the DTS label. It is surround sound and is made up of tracks originally mixed/recorded by FZ during the 70s. It is essentially an audio documentary of ideas by FZ about quad and 4 channel mixes and multichannel recordings. Dweezil tweezed these items into a full on programme. Obviously, it will not translate on ordinary radio." So quipped Gail. You can order it now from CD Universe, or direct from DTS."

Get ready for the Zappa of the Month Club.

The family of the late Frank Zappa is putting together plans to release music from the composer-musician's vast vaults via a subscription service. They hope it will expand the Zappa legacy among his fans and establish a unique business model suited to such a unique artist.

The details are still being worked out, but Gail Zappa, Frank's widow, says that the concept is pretty simple. Fans will pay an annual fee (probably around $100) and receive a set number of new releases each year (probably five), some of which will not be available elsewhere. Subscribers will have some level of choice as to what titles they receive from an ever-expanding catalog, and will also likely get bonus material and other special merchandise.

"We get people who say they only want to buy Frank's music directly from us," Zappa says, sitting in the family's Laurel Canyon house with their son Dweezil.

Beneath the house is the vault, a climate-controlled basement room stacked with shelf after shelf of audiotapes and films made by Zappa (who obsessively recorded nearly every concert he gave) in addition to studio recordings of his many band projects and classical compositions.

In the years since Frank Zappa's 1993 death from prostate cancer, the vaults have been largely closed, in part due to tension between the family and Rykodisc, the record label that owned the rights to the Zappa catalog. That deal expires in October, though, and the family is ready to open the door.

"I've always said that my day job is to protect the integrity of the work," Gail says.

That, adds Dweezil, is why the plans were devised to retain as much control as possible over the archives.

"Our dilemma is we have a core audience that's very enthusiastic," he says. "But music appreciation is nonexistent these days."

Under a new label named Vaulternative, marketed through the www.zappa.com website, two concert recordings were released in recent years. But the new program is really being launched with the brand-new Joe's Corsage, which despite a title playing off the 1979 Joe's Garage albums actually consists of demos recorded by Zappa with his first Mothers of Invention band in 1964.

Archivist Joe Travers has been combing through the tapes for material that could be released, and Dweezil is marshaling a remix program to put both previously released and new discoveries in state-of-the-art surround sound for a parallel release program.

The latter will be introduced with Quadropheliac, essentially an audio documentary being made from unreleased tapes on which the elder Zappa experimented with surround-type recording in the mid-'70s. At this point the material will be released only as hard-copy CDs, not as digital downloads - the Zappas believe the technology is too limited to do the music justice.

While others have had success with extensive archival projects, such as the Grateful Dead with its ongoing "Dick's Picks" concert series, it's the subscription angle that makes the Zappa plans stand out. Pete Howard, editor of the collector-oriented music publication ICE, thinks it's an overdue idea.

"As a business model it makes great sense for a label or people doing it," Howard says. "It keeps the ability to do product flow at a predictable level. And for the consumer and fan it has got to be win-win, because there will be all kinds of things coming out of the vaults that wouldn't otherwise. It ensures a steady flow of goodies. There needs to be a little blind faith that there will be quality, but that shouldn't be a problem with the Zappa material. I wish other artists would follow suit."

Vandaag ontvingen we de eerste recentie van Joe's Corsage:
The material on the disc is The Mothers in their infancy. It contains relatively primitive demos for the Freak Out album, performances from the Broadside, and a few unexpected surprises. There are three early interview segments, (1967) at the beginning, middle and end, and it's the most entertaining and interesting artifact to come out from the vault yet. It's in a simple jewel-case, has a decent booklet, and we are finally being charged a reasonable price. Everything is exactly the opposite of all the previous transactions. Now...where the fuck is the Petit Wazoo, Dance Me This, The Varase album, Trancefusion?

Van jazz- en funklegende George Duke verscheen onlangs de cd Face The Music, uitgebracht door zijn eigen platenmaatschappij Big Piano Music (BPM) dat hij oprichtte uit onvrede met de huidige muziekindustrie. Duke – groot geworden als bandlid van Frank Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention – ontwikkelde zich al vroeg tot muzikale duizendpoot. Als producent maakte hij naam met o.a. Miles Davis, The Pointer Sisters en Deniece Williams. In R.A.M een optreden van George Duke én een gesprek.

Joe Satriani en Steve Vai op Arrow Rock Festival Twee fantastische gitaristen zijn bevestigd: Joe Satriani en Steve Vai! Tijdens de speciale G3 - An Evening with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai & bands + special guest zullen zij ieder met hun eigen band optreden tijdens een avondvullend programma.

G3 is inmiddels een bekend concept. Bedacht door de gitaarvirtuozen in 1996, groeide deze jam uit tot een terugkerend evenement waarbij Satriani en Vai elk met hun eigen band optreden. Daarnaast nodigen ze telkens een andere, derde artiest uit.

Joe Satriani, een van de meest bekende technisch deskundigen op gitaargebied, gaf ooit nog gitaarles aan Steve Vai. Beide waren geinspireerd door de gitaarlegende Jimi Hendrix. Toen Vai bekend werd als gitarist van David Lee Roth, hielp hij ook zijn vroegere meester aan wereldfaam. Beide hebben inmiddels een indrukwekkend aantal albums, optredens en samenwerkingsverbanden op hun naam staan.

Op het Arrow Rock Festival zullen de grootheden met een nog onbekende gastartiest het festival afsluiten met een avondvullend programma.

LOS ANGELES - Rose Marie Zappa, the mother of the late musician Frank Zappa, died Thursday. She was 91.

Zappa died at a Burbank convalescent hospital, said daughter Patrice Zappa, who added her mother had been in declining health.

"We were with her today, talking to her and letting her know we loved her," Patrice Zappa said.

Zappa was born in the United States, the daughter of Italian immigrants. She and her husband married in Baltimore in 1939 and moved to San Diego 15 years later.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by sons Robert and Carl and eight grandchildren.

Frank Zappa died of prostate cancer in 1993 at age 52.

Dietmar Bonnen is een klassieke Duitse pianist die af en toe wel iets met rock doet. Jimi Hendrix en Frank Zappa kent hij als zijn broekzak. Samen met de Russische violist Alexei Aigui maakte hij zopas de cd Black water met composities van Frank Zappa. Cucamonga belt erover met Dietmar Bonnen.

Gail Zappa, weduwe van Frank Zappa, meldde zich afgelopen maandag bij een Canadese rechtbank om een schadevergoeding te eisen van Ameublements Tanguay Inc, een meubelketen die "een werk van mijn echtgenoot zonder toelating hebben gebruikt, stukgeslagen, in mootjes gehakt en gemutileerd om hun belangen te dienen." Voorzitter Jacques Tanguay liet weten dat er sinds 1998 meerdere voorstellen zijn geweest om de kwestie in der minne te regelen. Hij verdedigde zich verder met het argument dat hij geen flauw benul had van de auteur van de song "Watermelon in Easter Hay" en er bijgevolg geen sprake kan zijn van kwaad opzet. (bron: Billboard)

Tien jaar geleden nam Frank Zappa met het Ensemble Modern The yellow shark op. Hij overleed kort na de release ervan. Maar nog tijdens zijn leven had hij plannen voor een tweede cd met dat Ensemble. Die is er nu: Greggery Peccary & other persuasions. Cucamonga praat erover met arrangeur Ali N. Askin en dirigent Jonathan Stockhammer.
