Darryl’s Restaurant

by Michael E. and Jarrod F.

****1/2

From the outside Darryl’s doesn’t look like an ordinary restaurant.  The unique architectural design gives a good hint of Darryl’s early building in 1861.  On the inside Darryl’s doesn’t look like the ideal restaurant either.  It is similar to a cross between a jail and a bank.  The walls of Darryl’s are decorated with old antiques.  Dining there is casual.  Darryl’s has a great location across the street from Regency Mall.
The choices at Darryl’s vary greatly.  There are many appetizers to choose from including soups, buffalo wings, and fried cheese.  The choices for entrees are diverse, and include pasta, steak, chicken, hamburgers, sandwiches, and pork ribs.  The dessert selection looks delicious with different kinds of cheesecakes.  The cost of dishes ranges from $7 to $18, but most are under $10 dollars.
One unique thing about Darryl’s is the rootbeer.  When Michael ordered rootbeer, he was expecting to get a regular glass with rootbeer.  To his astonishment, he received an old style glass bottle with rootbeer and a chilled mug.  With the large choice of appetizers, Michael and I had a hard time deciding which to order.  Michael ordered potato skins.  They were thin and crispy, topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, and celery pieces.  I ordered buffalo wings.  They were excellent, but very spicy.  The appetizer was served with stalks of celery with blue cheese dip.  For all of the appetizers there was a choice of size.  You could order the regular size or the small size.  Michael and I found this very convenient because we were able to order a small size appetizer, and we were still hungry enough for our meal.
Michael ordered Cajun fried shrimp for his entree.  The shrimp were similar to popcorn shrimp.  They had a slightly spicy taste and were served with a honey mustard sauce, which had a strong, sweet taste.  I ordered the roadside chicken sandwich, which was served with caramelized onions, American cheese, and bacon.  On the bun there were “tiretracks” (burnt black lines in the shape of tiretracks).  My meal also was  served with French fries.  Darryl’s is a great place to go whether you’re at the mall with friends or looking for a nice restaurant to go for dinner with your family.

Goo Goo Dolls

Dizzy Up the Girl

**** 1/2
by Dave I.

In this new CD, the Goo Goo Dolls have made a transition from a more “punkish” image to a more mellow sound.  If you listen closely, you can still hear a trace of the punk feeling in some of the songs, but they’ve made a pretty clean slide.  With the two songs that you seem to hear constantly on the radio, “Iris” and “Slide,” the Goo Goo Dolls can expect to make quite a bit of money on this album.
Dizzy Up the Girl should be a big hit because not only are the two hit songs very good, but the entire album is great music for anyone with an ear for modern rock.  Put to the ultimate test, this CD will even please my mother (which is quite a feat to accomplish unless you’re a country singer who can twang with the best of ‘em).

Overall: Dizzy Up the Girl is sure to please anyone with “common horse sense” about music.  If you don’t like the lyrics or the sound of John Rzeznik’s half-raspy voice, just turn on your vocal fader and listen to the great guitar riffs.  Starting with “Dizzy,” moving to “Broadway,” and on to “Acoustic #3,” I’d recommend this CD from sunrise to sunset and back again.

 Jonny Lang

Wander This World

by Beau C.
***1/2
Jonny Lang has gone slow and I like it. The 17-year-old blues guitar wonderboy has gone from hardcore blues to a more acoustic, mellow sound. Lang doesn’t oversing, as he did in his debut, Lie To Me , but his true musical ability isn’t in full force as it was in the unknown 1996 debut. In his newest EP, Wander This World ,  Lang’s slow love songs dominate the majority of the 12 tracks and frankly, get sort of boring. His ultra-bluesy voice fluctuates with every note. Jonny Lang’s past fans might be somewhat disapointed to learn he’s gone soft.. Unlike his first album, however, songs  are written by people other than the 15-year-old guitar novice. But those few Lang non-supporters will walk away from this album with a song in their head and a smile on their face. Wander This World  is a slow, bluesy, acoustic CD.  It’s  great-- but only if you’re in the mood.

Pleasantville

by Leora Rothenberg

Rated: Pg-13
Starring: Reese Witherspoon (FEAR), Tobey Maguire (THE ICE STORM), Jeff Davis, Joan Allen, and J.T Walsh
Critics Rating: ****1/2
Plot: David and Jennifer Wagner are brother and sister. When they argue over who gets the remote, they get transported into a black and white, 50’s tv show called “Pleasantville”. Pleasantville is a place where the sun is always shining, the basketball team is always winning, and a fireman’s job is to get cats out of trees. While they try and get out, they end up changing everyone’s lives forever, including their own. For better or worse.
Why this movie is so good: “Pleasantville” is a wholesome, good movie. It has amazing graphics, and the black and white is so sharp it’s amazing. Its just astonishing to be in the theatre and to see black and white in the same scene together with color. It  has an unpredictable ending, and it has a little bit of discrimination history in it also.
Overall: All in all, this film has got to be the best movie I have seen for a long time. I’d recommend this movie to everyone.

Riverdance

*****
by Becca Barnett
Have you ever seen Riverdance? If you haven’t seen it, then  you have definitely missed something. The dancing, sets, and costumes are phenomenal. They did stunts and tap dancing along with toe. There was a flamenco dancer with a flaring, red dress. The women’s shoes look like tap shoes and toe shoes with high heels.  It lasted about two hours and had an intermission.  I give Riverdance five stars our of five.

Saturday Night Live

by  Worth B.

From Buckwheat to Operaman to the Roxbury Guys, Saturday Night Live is an outstanding show in my eyes.  Saturday Night Live started in 1976 and plays from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.  I think the show is better than ever, unlike what the critics think.  The critics say that Saturday Night Live is plunging, and to me it has been a great show for the whole 22 years.  Classic comedians on the show are Eddie Murphy, John Belushi, and Dan Akroyd.  These people started the show off to a roaring beginning.  Some members of the new Saturday Night Live cast are Rob Schneider, Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Phil Hartman and Chris Farley.  If you have watched any of these shows, you should keep watching into the coming years.
