GeoCities now supports most of the file types (extensions) for FrontPage 98, so the FrontPage 98 Publish function will work for many people. You should try it to see if it works. If the FrontPage 98 Publish function doesn't work for you, I recommend using FTP to upload your pages to GeoCities.
If you use some FrontPage specific features (like Counters), the Publish function may fail because it tries to upload files that GeoCities does not support. If you remove these files, the publish function will usually work.
Note: Before publishing your web with FrontPage, if you have a GeoCities Guestbook (geobook.html) as part of your web. Make sure you download, rename, and/or backup geobook.html, because the current version on your hard drive will be published.
The publishing information for GeoCities is as follows:
Publish Web To | http://www.oocities.org/NeighborHood/Avenue/1234 |
Service Provider | FTP |
FTP server name | ftp.oocities.com |
Subfolder for Web pages | /NeighborHood/Avenue/1234 or leave blank |
User | your GeoCities Member Name |
Password | your GeoCities Password |
First,
connect to the Internet, you can't upload if you are not connected.
In
the FrontPage Explore, on the File Menu, select the Publish FrontPage Web option. This
will open the Publish Dialog. If you have already successfully published before, just
select the http://www.oocities.org/... entry, and
press the Ok button. If this is the first time you are publishing your pages, continue
with these instructions.
Push
the More Webs button, this brings up the Publish FronPage Web dialog, for the Location to
Publish your Web to, enter your full GeoCities address (capitalized correctly), for
example:
http://www.oocities.org/NeighborHood/Avenue/1234
Then press the Ok button.
FrontPage
will then go through some gyrations as it trys to figure out how it can publish your
pages. Eventually the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard will pop up. If the Web Publishing
Wizard isn't asking you for FTP, information, then tell it to use Other Service Provider
using FTP.
Fill in the Web Publishing Wizard FTP information as follows:
Server Name: ftp.oocities.com
Directory Path: leave blank
Then press the Next button.
The
Web Publishing Wizard will then switch to asking for your User Name and Password. Fill in
your GeoCities member name and password and press the Finish button.
Note: your member name and password should be all lowercase, consisting
of just letters and numbers, if this is not the case, you may never be able to upload to
GeoCities.
The
Web Publishing Wizard will then go through the gyrations of connecting to the GeoCities
FTP server, calculating what files to publish, and hopefully transferring those files to
GeoCities.
The
GeoCities Server is Busy, the GeoCities FTP Server only allows a limited number of users
to connect at one time
The
GeoCities FTP Sever is not working or is down. Check the GeoCities System Status page, but
this isn't always posted on a timely basis.
Uploading

Uploading

Bad
