Despite the many "Kentucky" jokes you may have
heard, Kentucky is one of the finest states in the United States! From our thoroughbred horses to our
bourbon, from our bluegrass to our caves and everything in between, it is a great place to live and to raise your
children. Kentucky has maintained a hometown personality with that "Southern Hospitality" always ready
to greet visitors. Overall, our climate is rather mild. We don't usually have the harsh northern winters and we also
don't have the relentless sultry summers of the deep south. From the mountains of eastern Kentucky to the
rolling hills of central Kentucky to the lakes in western Kentucky, we have ever changing scenery. Kentucky is
synonymous with Basketball, namely the University of Kentucky Wildcats. GO BIG BLUE!!! Yes, I am an
avid UK fan and watch all their games. Even though farming is probably the primary industry in our state, we have
also attracted a lot of industrial factories, especially in the automotive field. We produce coal in both the
eastern and western part of the state. Louisville, which is our largest city is host to the world renown Kentucky Derby
and the Louisville Slugger.
Bardstown, which is my hometown is not only the home of "My Old Kentucky Home" but also has one of the best, if not the best, outdoor musicals called "The Stephen Foster Story" which depicts his life. It is also known as the
"Bourbon Capital of the World" since more bourbon is produced there than anywhere else. There are many historic homes located in Nelson County and the tourism industry there is filled with the historic traditions of the past. If
you are ever in the area, there are lots of things to do and see and are guaranteed to be enjoyable for the whole family. Just outside of Bardstown, close to New Haven, Ky. there is the Abbey of Gethsemani which is a Trappist
Monastery. Bardstown, and all of Nelson County is predominantly Catholic and this monastery is basically self sufficient. The monks are not allowed to speak, except for a very short period of time each day. Their site is worth
taking a look at.
Glasgow, where I currently live has its own attractions. We have beautiful Barren River Lake which is host to the annual Scottish Highland Games. These authentic games and entertainment attracts people from not only across
America but from other parts of the world too. We are also very proud of our Electric Plant Board. It is a city owned utility company, which not only provides us with electricity, but also our cable TV and the innovative HomeLan
internet connection. Imagine downloading something at 85 or 90K per second...with us it is an every day thing. We are so fortunate to have a local government with the foresight to plan for the future. They have fought the
battles for the rest of the country. We are also close to Mammoth Cave and several other smaller caves which are frequent tourist attractions. We have a population of over 14,000, which is large enough to provide all the
conveniences, such as restaurants, shopping and hotels, but small enough to give it that "down home" flavor.
