George and Annie, and me, at age 5. This was taken at my Aunt Catherine's house in North Bergen, NJ, just before we went to France, for my fathers' next duty assignment. We came from Offutt AFB, in Nebraska, the drive taking almost a week at a time when the only turnpike existing was the one in Pennsylvania. It was August, no air-conditioning in the '55 Buick Roadmaster, and a restless (and probably cranky) child in the back seat. We rode a USNS transport ship across the Atlantic, to Bremen, Germany, taking just over a week. Mom and I had a berth with another wife, and her child, and Dad had to stay in the troop compartment with all the other men. Not exactly a pleasure cruise, but I still have images of that trip in memory, and perhaps that was the genesis of my love of the sea.
