Underway Replenishemnt Aerial Photo

Underway Replenishment (Fuels)

This image shows the Saratoga receiving fuel from the USS Platte.  This is an example of what a photo taken with recon camera in an aircraft looks like, but it doesn't begin to show the razor-sharp quality of the original print.  The camera used for this image use 5" wide black and white film, and the negative is capable of being enlarged to considerable dimension without loss of detail.  This test image was made by an F-14 carrying a TARPS (Tactical Air Recconaisance Pod System), and the 'frisket' along the bottom of the image is added during printing, and gives pertinent information regarding the target in the print.  The frisket identifys the target, course, speed, and location, altitude of the aircraft, date and time, the crew flying the mission, and the security classification of the image.  The symbols on either side identify the recon squadron as being VF-103, the 'Sluggers', and the one on the right identifies them as belonging to CAW (Carrier Air Wing) 17.

Camera: KA-99 (TARPS), 9 inch lens, Kodak Plus-X Aerecon film
