This is my place for posting musings, opinions, insights, baloney, poetry, and anything else I feel like putting here. This week I'm looking at politics . . but I'm looking North right now . . to Canada. I'm more aware than ever before about Canada, and keep finding new things about her that I like. I'm not sure I can make much comment on the quotes I have here, but my observation is something along the line that we are not so very different, at all. At least, not much different in how we look at our politicians.
"The eyes are Paul Newman blue. His hair has the swoop of the Robert Redford style and the voice the resonance of a Lorne Greene school of broadcasting. The jaw is by Gibraltar.
The Edmonton Journal, on Brian Mulroney, newly elected prime minister of Canada.
I'm not sure if this was written in admiration or not . .
"The Liberals talk about a stable government but we don't know how bad the stable is going to smell."
TC Douglas, leader of the Canadian New Democratic Party. news summaries, 30 Oct. 65
Sounds just like something Johnson might have said . . or that Nixon might have said about Johnson . . .
"If the national mental illness of the United States is megalomania, that of Canada is paranoid schizophrenia."
Margaret Atwood, The Journals of Susanna Moody, quoted in Columbos' Canadian Quotations. Hurtig 74
No comment. At least, that's what I'm saying. Not that I would play on that paranoia . . would I?
"I accept with equanimity the question so constantly addressed to me, "Are you an American?", and merely return the accurate answer, "Yes, I am a Canadian."
Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister of Canada, 1941 statement recalled on his election to prime minister.
I love that kind of 'savoir faire' . . . good answer, Les.
"I was asked to prepare a little program, and I never stopped."
Jeanne Sauvé, on how she became first woman govenor-general of Canada, London Times, 29 Nov. 85
And with a smile to another program-preparer, I'll leave our neighbor for the time being, having enjoyed the scenery, and the people, and look forward to my next visit.
