The Spectrum Wars III: The Last Crusade
Awards Page

So far, this is the only game that has gone through to a definable conclusion. The Second Global Alliance, organized by the Brown Brahmins, and taking in both the ATA and NATO alliances, successfully defeated the Purple Protestants and built a world-wide alliance that agreed to carve up the world among themselves and ensure a lasting peace.

Most Valuable Player: Martin Hohner (Brown Brahmins). Martin took a medium-sized power, India, and managed to build TWO worldwide alliances, becoming the single most influential player in the course of world events, and led most of the invasions and wars in the game, never losing a single battle. He also, incidentally, designed the game and built this web site.

Runners-up: TIE: Nathan Bax (Scarlet Samurai) and Tina Wooden (Denim Democracy). Both were active in the formation and policy leadership of their respective alliances, and both added significantly to their territories. Both also displayed a willingness to back-stab when the occasion called for it, and refused to be led around on a leash by anyone.

Honorable Mention: Chris Yarwood (Purple Protestants). Chris could have tied or even beaten Martin for the MVP award, but unfortunately he had to resign his position to attend graduate school. His replacement, Marcus Johnston, took what was the single strongest position in the game, and managed in one turn to lose it all. If Chris had stayed in, he may not have made the same mistakes, but we will never know…

Doing the Most with the Least Award: Andy Baumann (Black Bandits). Andy won the opposite of this award last game, and he seems to have learned his lesson. This time, he was EXTREMELY active, adding more square miles to his territory than any other single player. Of course, most of that was useless desert, but when you are Central Africa, what else can you reach?

Prozac Award: Mike Fey (Jade Junta). This award is given to the player who was the most insane and evil in SW2, yet who settled down and did a darn good job in SW3. Back in the second game, Mike went nuts, threatened to nuke the whole world for no reason, and very nearly was banned from any further participation in future games. This time around, he joined an alliance, was active in negotiations within that alliance and with other nations, and added significantly to his territory and military power. Good job, Mike!

Short Timer Award: Matt Hutchinson (Red Republic). Although he didn't do all that much militarily, that was just because he was trapped on two sides by powerful alliances that refused to let him join. However, he was THE ultimate wheeler-dealer, cutting more trade deals than anyone else in the history of the game, and growing rich off the profits. Matt was on the verge of finally being allowed to join one of the major alliances when he unfortunately had to resign his position…to take over as Technical Moderator, a role he fulfilled well.

Humor Award: Danny Reid (White Wing). Not so much for anything he did in the game (although allying with Seth was pretty funny), but for publishing the "Spectral Enquirer". This was a satirical parody of the official newsletters that only came out when the moderator took an inordinately long time in publishing the official newsletters.

Doing the Least with the Most Award: Danny Reid (White Wing). Oh, Danny. You showed such promise at first, helping conquer North Africa, but your alliance with Seth proved to be your downfall.

Being Led by the Leash Award: Alexis Stratton (Crimson Catholics). This is a conquer-the-world game, but some people don't seem to get it. Alexis always seems to be trying to be an avowed Pacifist surrounded by screaming barbarian warlords. However, she can always, and I mean always, be talked into practically anything. In this game, Alexis was led around by the leash by both Purple and eventually Brown, and almost never suggested any ideas to her alliances herself.

Shooting Yourself In the Foot Award: Anselm "Andy" Wooden (Green Guerillas). Andy thus joins the dubious company of Seth Thomas in getting a rule on the Hints Page named after him. Andy somehow got the idea in his head that it would be fun to kill off half his (already meager) starting military by having a civil war just so he could write some cool newsletter articles about it. Now, players ARE encouraged to write articles for the newsletters, but they shouldn't have to shoot themselves in the foot to do so.

Big Loser Award: Seth Thomas (Olive Orthodoxy). Man, what is it with Seth? He was such a hoot in the first game, and he was even the Moderator of a spin-off game using SW2 rules, but his reach always seems to exceed his grasp. Last game, he was India, and he invaded his neighbors too quickly, and faced a multinational force that overwhelmed him by sheer numbers. This game, he was Eastern Europe, and while he managed to get a strong ally in Danny Reid (White Wing), he foolishly provoked a war with Russia, annoying his other allies enough that they actually HELPED Russia, their mortal enemy, to conquer and annex their erstwhile ally, Seth. It's rather sad that Seth will not be with us for the next game, since he deserves a chance to redeem himself.
