Mount Lavinia
Although a beach stretches intermittently along the coast from
Galle Face Green, it only becomes desirable south of Colombo
at Mount Lavinia. It is close 11km
(7miles) to the city centre but traffic volume makes sure the
journey will take 30 minutes or more.
The
beach at Mount Lavinia is pleasant enough, considering its proximity to the
city, and the nearby Galle Road. The sea is usually safe
for swimming, but can be rough and you should be wary of
the strong
undertow which crops up all along the Colombo coast. Use
of the Mount Lavinia Hotel's pool
will set you back a small fee unless you are a guest, but
is worth
if for a laze in the refreshing sea breeze and for a wander
around the anachronistic splendour of this building which
was originally the residence of a British governor.
There
are couple of medium-priced hotels encroaching on the toes of this grand old-fashioned
dowager, and mushrooming behind her are some family-run guest
houses which are good value. There are many beachfront restarants
which serve both international and local dishes.
