Sports Massage

Whether you are an active individual, weekend warrior or a professional athlete, working hard to stay fit or pushing your workouts to get to the next level in your sport, you can benefit from sports massage. Sports massage can do more than simply provide relief for the overworked body.

Athletes all over the world, at all levels of ability, can now rely on massage as a vital tool in part of their training schedules. Sports massage, when used regularly as part of a regimented training program, will help increase blood flow and improve range of motion - which is an important part of recovery. Massage can also accelerate gains in muscle strength and help to speed the healing of soft tissue injuries.

Swedish massage combines effleurage, kneading and friction on the surface of the muscles with assisted movement of the joints. It relaxes the body/mind, flushes toxins out of the muscles and improves circulation and range of motion.

Deep tissue massage, as its name implies, uses slow, deep pressure on tight areas. This can be done either following or going against the grain of the muscles, tendons and fascia. It releases tension and restores suppleness and length.

If you observe the body closely, paying attention to pleasure, pain, discomfort and other signals that it sends you’ll learn when a certain type of massage is received best by your body. To begin, a good idea is to avoid new or more rigorous techniques directly before a major competition.

You’ll also become more aware of symptoms of overtraining and learn how to combine massage and your workouts to stay fit, get stronger or faster and keep injuries to a minimum. And of course, if you are injured you can’t train properly, which will not provide the desired effect of working out.

So when planning your training schedule, try to include a regular visit to a Registered Massage Therapist who specialized in Sports Massage and you’ll soon reap the benefits of full recovery between workouts and therefore better quality workouts.
