When I first met Shawn I had been experiencing a very frustrating string of injuries. I could not train very hard for any more than a couple of weeks. I decided to give massage therapy a try, and Shawn introduced me to active-isolated stretching. The injuries subsided and that year I achieved my goal of a sub-40 minute 10K by running a 39:20. Since then my times have continued to drop to a 37:03. The following year, I wanted to improve my running by cross training and competing in Duathlons. Shawn worked with me to come up with an effective training schedule that always left me feeling fresh for the next workout, and as a family man himself understood just how precious spare time is. Under his guidance my cycling improved dramatically in terms of speed and with less discomfort. I won my age group in my first duathlon, and continued to improve by placing 14th overall in Windsor, again winning my age group. This year, mostly in part to the strength training routine Shawn set up for me, I continue to improve and won the Gravenhurst duathlon. Mid-summer last yearI began to contemplate the possibility of tackling the marathon challenge. While building off of current training, mileage slowly increased. Shawn told me to listen to my body, and not to bump up the mileage too fast. During this time Shawn was always there to reassure me when the inevitable aches came, and helped me to differentiate between those aches and potential injuries. When I missed some workouts and began to despair that I had missed too many sessions to be effective in the marathon, Shawn again erased my doubts. When the “big day” finally came it was great to have him actually there (not just for me, of course, Anne was there as well!!). I was ecstatic to cross the line in 3:00:18, a time I thought was unachievable for someone who has only run for a couple of years. Shawn is always calm, understanding and quietly encouraging. He realizes that being injured is the worst feeling an athlete can have, and that no progress can be made while you are injured. At no time was it recommended that I buy any gizmos, or set goals that were not my own. Shawn is modest and comes across as a regular guy, not an accomplished athlete. I feel as though there has been three big forces in helping me achieve my goals this past couple of years - my wife, my Runner's Choice running group, and Shawn Reeder. Scott Finch |
