VWFL FINALS 2002

Season 2002 saw the St.Alban Spurs make their second Grand Final.  It was only two weeks earlier that the Spurs beat the undefeated Melbourne University by an incredible 10 goals, however the Grand final told a different story.

The Spurs won the toss and elected to kick with the wind, but it was the Muggars who put the first major score on the board.  The Spurs added two goals to their scoreline with Dee Dundov snapping a 45-metre goal on the run, yet it was the Muggars that led by 9 points at the main change.

The Muggars came out strong and in the first few minutes of the third quarter added another goal against the wind, the Spurs had plenty of the ball, yet could not convert and use the wind to their advantage.  Spurs on-baller Shannon McFerran and Ruckman Lisa Hellard combined well and tried to lift the Spurs, yet the Muggars in the end were to strong.  In front of a crowd 1000 the Muggars utilised the conditions much better and were eventually victors by 15 points.  Special mention must go to Ruckman Lisa Hellard of the Spurs who was awarded best on ground for the day.

A Great effort to the Spurs, who didn't even, contemplate in playing in the 2002 Grand Final.   Although the Spurs lost the Grand Final, they had a fantastic season, their team spirit and endeavour was commendable.

Not only did the team have success but also individuals, Shannon McFerran was awarded the Helen Lambert medal, Lisa Hellard Best on ground in the Grand Final, Debbie Lee Captain Victoria and won Best on Grand in the state final and Henry McFerran was elected the coach of the 2002 Victorian state team.  All in all a great season had by all, look out for the spurs 2003.

HAMMERHEADS

Season 2002 also saw the Spurs Captain Debbie Lee involved in the channel seven's reality TV show "The Club", which followed the trials & tribulations of grass roots footy in the Western Region Football League (WRFL).

This 22-week reality TV show saw Debbie Lee challenge the rules of the WRFL and Football Victoria; she raised the controversial question "Should women be able to play against men in Aussie Rules Footy?"  The outcome was expected and the possibility of Debbie Lee running onto the field as a Hammerhead was thwarted.  Her involvement with the Hammerheads fortunately continued and it was the coaching staff who appointed her as assistant coach to Carlton Champion David Rhys-Jones.
