THE
ISSUE
Why should the
STM post "Stand on the Right" signs? To encourage users to respect the global custom of
keeping slow traffic to the right.
Why is this
important? It will reduce the daily frustration of being stuck
behind someone blocking the escalator on the left
side.
Will these
signs work? Yes. These kinds of signs are posted in
London,
Toronto,
Edmonton,
Vancouver,
New Jersey, Amsterdam, Rotterdam,
Zurich, and elsewhere and
work quite well.
Is it safe to
walk on an escalator? The STM says it is not safe because users could fall
and knock others down. But this is also true of
regular stairs.
Other cities have
proven that walking on an escalator (while holding
the railing) is safe.
What can I do?
Write a letter to the STM asking for these signs
and
sign the online petition.
