These are some points to consider when you write your letters:
-
This problem has been going on for far too long--since 1964.
-
It is time for action, not talk, studies and litigation.
-
There are solutions--the cover of 1988-89 has gone a long way to fixing
the problem; let's finish the job.
-
The Tsolum River could be one of the most productive coho, pink and steelhead
rivers on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
-
Many coho and pink salmon are returning to the river, largely due to habitat
restoration work. But these returns are nowhere near what they could be.
And one rain event at the mine site at the wrong time could destroy this
progress.
-
How can we claim to be the 'recreation capital of BC' or a desirable eco-tourism
destination while this problem goes unattended?
-
The time for worrying about the cost of mine reclamation is BEFORE the
mine is started, not after the damage is done.
-
The government(s) that permitted this have the primary responsibility of
seeing it repaired.
