Concerning the Mt. Washington Mine We, residents of the Comox Valley, wish to bring to your attention: THAT the Mt. Washington Mine, opened in 1964 and abandoned in 1967 continues to leach copper into the Tsolum River in concentrations lethal to salmonids; and THAT this continuing loss of salmonid productivity of the Tsolum River severely and grievously limits the economic potential of the Comox Valley for commercial and recreational fishing and for marketing the Valley as an eco-tourism destination; and THAT we believe that there is a practical and effective solution to this problem; THEREFORE, we respectfully request that the Government of British Columbia reaffirm the commitment that the Hon., late, Jack Davis, formerly Minister of Mines made over ten years ago to resolve the problem of acid mine drainage from this site; and FURTHERMORE, that the Government of British Columbia immediately
undertake the engineering design of a cover and other structures necessary
to reduce the leaching of toxic copper from this site.
