Some people call this a hobby, but I think obsession is a more suitable
term for my involvement in this hobby.
Radio controlled model helicopters is a combination of the understanding of
mechanical engineering, aerodynamics theory, electrical basics, and
hands / eyes coordination.
My first encounter with flying RC helicopter was in 1986 with a Kalt Baron 28 brought in from the orient. This heli was the first attempt by any helicopter manufacturer to produce a kit smaller than the common 50-60 size range. Not knowing any better, the kit was purchased with a JR 5 channel radio on mode 1. While mode 1 is commonly used through out the world, here in the US people fly on mode 2, which is completely reversed than mode 1. This along with the fact that the radio is on 40 Mhz band, made the radio virtually useless as I search for assistance from fellow modellers. After several sessions of bouncing the heli around, I decided to put it up in the room as a display model. Through the years I have learned the ins and out of how these miniatures wonders function, as I emptied my wallet whenever I visit a local hobby shop. No this is not a cheap hobby, but it sure is very addictive. Some people say the only difference between flying a R/C helicopter and doing drugs is that you can get arrested for the latter. I was so addicted that one summer I was waking up before sunrise just so I can drive 1 hour up north to meet with friends for an early session of heli flying. Being a horrible morning person I am, this is a rather unusual behavior. |
