Grindle Point Light - Isleboro,
Maine
|
Isleboro is an island off the coast just
north of Camden and can be reached by state-run ferry from Lincolnville. (Back in 1995 when we
made the trip, two adults and a car cost
about $20). If all you want to do is visit
the light, then you can just walk on to the
ferry as the lighthouse is right at the ferry
dock. However, the rest of the island is
quite picturesque with some extravagant homes
that might be worth peeking at, especially
in the Dark Harbor area. Actors John Travolta
(and wife Kelly Preston) and Kirstie Alley
live part-time on the Island.
The light station at Grindle Point was established
in 1851, although the present structure dates
to only 1874. During the years 1934 to 1987
the use of the light was discontinued when
it was replaced by a skeleton tower. In 1987,
the Coast Guard was convinced by the town
to re-light the original light tower and
the skeleton was removed.
If you do take your car, there is plenty
of parking at the light. At the time of our
visit, there was also a small snack bar with
burgers and such. Part of the keepers house
is open as a museum.
