Portland Head Light - Cape Elizabeth


The Portland Head light is Maine's oldest lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1791.

Because of it's close proximity to Portland, and its accessibility (you can even stroll the grounds), it is perhaps the most visited lighthouse on the Maine coast.

Ironically, we don't have any color photographs of the light to share with you at this time. But below is one of our favorite photographs. Taken in black and white and scanned from a print, it shows the venerable light in one of the weather conditions it was designed for, dense fog.
