Steve started his NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour career in 1986, and had an outstanding career there. It was only a matter of time before someone noticed his abilities and signed him up for Winston Cup driving. In 1995, Steve came in second place in the points run, missing by a record 3 points, and was voted Most Popular Driver. Next year, he came in second again, just 12 points shy of the championship. Steve was voted Most Popular Driver a total of 2 times in his Modified career. Also, he is a two-time NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour Pole Champion.
Steve was honored on Friday, June 19th as one of the 50 greatest Modified drivers of all-time! The celebration was held in Stafford Springs, Connecticut at Stafford Motor Speedway. SMS was more or less a home base for Steve from 1993 to 1996 when he was living in Ellington, CT. Read more about the event at the Stafford Motor Speedway Website. Photo from SMS website
