Dale Earnhardt, Inc. signed Steve to an initial
3 year deal, starting out with Busch Series Grand National Division with the
option to go to the Winston Cup Series. Although Dale saw tremendous potential
in Steve, no one could have imagined the record-breaking season that would unfold.
Steve clinched the Raybestos Rookie of the Year title after the race on August
30, 1997, with a third straight top-5 run. He had already broken some of the
records for BGN rookies, and since then has broke, even more. Here is a listing
of the records:

"We started out with around 18
rookies this year on the Busch circuit and ended up with a steady seven
or eight and a lot of good drivers. We've been fortunate enough to have
a really strong rookie season. We haven't done it by finishing 10th and
12th and 15th. We've done it by winning races and finishing in the top
five and worrying more about winning the championship. The rookie points
have been kind of falling into place.
"When we set our goals at the beginning of the year, I said I'd like to win one race. If you can come into the Busch series as a rookie and win a race, you're accomplishing something. I've watched on TV for years and some guys run five or six seasons before they win. It's a competitive series, and with guys like Randy LaJoie and Mark Martin who win five or six races a year, that doesn't leave many scraps for many other guys. To have a rookie win one is an honor, never mind three. It's been a great year. We have a team that works together good. It's always been a winning team. The last three years they felt like they just didn't have the chemistry they needed to win. Jeff Green did a good job for 'em. He finished third in the points. He had a lot of consistent finishes, but it just didn't seem like everybody was happy. They might have had different goals. We came in and didn't know what was going to happen. We just kind of wanted to come in and see what we needed as a team. We didn't know if we needed a new crew chief or new people. We got rid of some people we thought might have been holding the team back. We got rid of three and hired three. It seemed like that was all we needed to do. The mix was there. Tony can be a little hard-headed at times and so can I. We all seem to have the same goal in mind, and that's to win races. After I gained his respect and his trust, things just got easier. He had the confidence in me, if I needed something in the car, that we can work together as a team. Dale has taught me to be patient." - Steve Park, 9-8-97 |
