Korea First Impressions : a different planet

unphoto imagine : Seoul

take a city like Melbourne then squash everything into an area a tenth the size, cover every building in gaudy signs not even in Roman letters, but in the strange Korean alphabet

11 Friday Arrive

Similar to Japan ,Oh my God ! Can't read anything, thank God I've got the guidebook

My plan is to see some tourist sights in Seoul. Then get out to smaller places where people are more friendly. I will travel from farm to farm with the WWOOF system as this will allow me to really experience the culture without spending to much money. If I find a good opportunity maybe I will stop in one place and teach English. So I first collected the WWOOF book.

Tried 3 hostels, but I didn't find them very hospitable, unlike New Zealand where they really understand backpackers

Sat - Tourist
Folklore Museum a very good experience. It's not a bad museum, but they have volunteer English speaking guides. I was very lucky to get my own good guide.

Saw Kyongbonkdong Palace. The 400 year old main royal palace. Hang on it looks pretty new, ... well actually they' still re building it, the original was completely destroyed by the Japanes 80 years ago.

It was interesting to see it's very different to European palaces, but the European palaces are much more interesting, cos of the architecture and furniture - you can really feel the past. In this one the buildings just look asian, you can see through the doors, but not go inside and anyway the custom was them to be fairly bare.

Like Alice in Wonderland; A different Planet - Tourist
  • Narrow alleyways packed with traffic
  • There's no food in the supermarket just crappy noodle and cake packets mostly filled with air. Well I guess it explains why the women look so slim.
  • When I look at the women's faces I see the same variety as in Western countries, but lt's like wearing oriental tinted sunglasses.
  • It's an ordeal travelling when you can't read or understand anything.
  • so many crowded markets, and small booth shop/workshops.
  • It's much more interesting to travel than in Australia cos everything is different and more exotic plus it's got the history and culture.
unphoto imagine : A Historic Korean Building : Palace, temple etc

They have already begun to look the same ... Maybe like churches in Europe in my opinion if you've seen one you've seen them all,
(unfortunately the author of the Lonely Planet loves them spectacular temple here, wonderful one here ... Yeh right !)

Sun more palaces, a bad guide pretty boring ..All the palaces look the same, 400 year old palaces just finished yesterday , then war museum (boring), ..Dong Damun market

Mon Namsan village a few preserved buildings similar to ones I have already seen in the palaces, Seoul Tower nice views, more markets,

Tue saw JSA movie

Wed National Museum not bad

Seoul is too crowded, too noisy, too hot, too busy .. got to get out ! Not sure where to go Konju sounds interesting
