7. Beef Bone Soup

Monday

In New Zealand one of WWOOF hosts complained about a Korean boy who gave up after one day complaining "I can't work in this mud", when it was only slightly muddy. Well he must have been a city boy cos I had to put on waders to weed the rice paddy, knee deep in mud.

I went back to teach the 14 year olds. They asked me to come back the next day.

In the afternoon we went to Chengdu for a bit of sightseeing, but the museum was closed on Mondays. Bought some Korean white wine which was pretty good.

Then we went to a specialty restaurant to eat beef bones soup ! They cook a soup of beef bones and beef for 12 hours. Did I like it ? Well the whole concept is bizarre to westerners; we don't eat bones we eat the best parts of the meat and then give the remains : fat and bones to the dog/cat. I'm sure in the past the poorest people ate bone soup, and it's not a nice flavour. Secondly you normally cook meat quite quickly so it keeps it's flavour and vitamins.
