I was lucky to find a WWOOF host cos it was the Chusok festival (Korean Christmas).
We went to Mr Ahn's main home in Daegu city as it was his task to lead the rest of the family in a Confusian ceremony to commemorate one year since his mother died.
My jobs included : cutting-up pears to make spray, cleaning the packing crates, making special compost
Monday : since it was Chusok the holiday when Koreans visit the ancestral graves
I stayed at home and tidied up.
Tuesday : we went to visit a nearby Suwon (nothing special)
unphoto imagine : Mr Ahn driving the 1m wide spray tractor through the tunnels made by arching the pear bush branches over steel frames so that each tree is "m" shaped
Wednesday : In the afternoon we drove to a small village to visit the father and mother of Mrs Ahn. It seemed very old and they had brought up 6 children in 3 rooms.
unphoto imagine : what a contrast to the wood and mud traditional compound house to the high rise apartments the sisters now live in it showed how fast Korea is changing.
We visited 2 of the sisters in their high rise apartments ,
Thursday : visit to Yongchan Agricultural Technology Centre
First went to city hall to meet Mr Park Jin-Gyu the mayor and chairman of the centre. Then we went into the countryside to the centre. There we met the MD Mr Kim Soo-Won
I toured the centre where they research and demonstrate different techniques. Farming is important to Yongchan cos it generates 60% of the area's income. It's a centre for fruit growing : grape, apple and pear |
We also met Kim Jeong Hwa an artist specialising in using traditional dyes.
It was the day of the departmental lunch so we accompanied them all to a local restaurant for Bulgogi.
Summary
Mr Ahn and his wife work hard at organic farming, but he finds it difficult to make money. I think after becoming accustomed to city life he finds it difficult to relax |
