DNPE Website and Homeschool Listings

Since homeschooling has grown so rapidly in NC, it has become increasingly more difficult for the Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) to answer requests for information on Notice of Intent filings and verification of school status. To address this issue, the DNPE web site has been revised to make the list of open North Carolina homeschools more accessible for review. This will allow homeschool families to check on Notice of Intent filings and ensure that their school is on the active-school list by checking the status themselves.

Homeschools in North Carolina are defined in Article 39 of the NC General Statute, which covers all nonpublic schools. This means we fall into the same statute as other private NC schools. Therefore, some of our school's information is classified as public information. NCHE has spoken with DNPE Director Rod Helder on several occasions to ensure that proper concern is taken for family privacy. He explained that this information has been available to public school officials (but difficult to access) for several years to allow them to check the status of a reported truant student who was actually being homeschooled, before initiating an investigation. Access to the list of NC homeschools will help reduce or eliminate investigations of truancy directed at state-recognized homeschool families. The increased accessibility is meant to help with DNPE's workload and be a convenience to homeschoolers as well. You may access the current DNPE listings at http://www.doa.state.nc.us/dnpe/hhh303a.htm.
