About Us

The Stort Valley group of the Ramblers’ Association was formed in 1995, the current membership being 80 strong. The group serves Harlow Town and the nearby village of Roydon Essex, both situated in the Stort Valley bordering Essex with Hertfordshire.

Our aims are to promote the four basic principles of the Ramblers’ Association.

  • Encourage walking for pleasure and to meet and make friends with like-minded people.
  • Protection of footpaths and Rights of Way for all walkers.
  • Defend the beauty of the countryside and observe the Countryside code.
  • Campaigning for freedom to roam over uncultivated open country.

Our programme consists of regular Sunday walks throughout the year ranging between 8-12 miles in distance. During high summer we organize mid-week evening walks of approx. 5 miles or two hours walking. In addition we have the occasional weekend away. The group has also enjoyed a full week away, each year in July, walking some of the well-known long distance paths.

We remain a small friendly group and wish to recruit and encourage new members to join us and offer new ideas and maintain the ideals of the Ramblers’ Association.

We are a democratic, voluntary organization, registered as a charity (no. 306089). We are not affiliated to any political party and are required by our constitution to be non-sectarian.
