Although there have been many positive results for cancer cures from sharks. It does not mean that there have been experiments made to disprove this theory. As of today, there have been many books published stating that sharks do get cancer; which destroys the previous theory that since sharks do not get cancer there must be something in their bodies to help them protect themselves from it. A previous book published in the early 1990s, is misleading to many people who fear getting cancer and would take any products stating that it would prevent them from getting cancer. One popular book called Sharks Don’t Get Cancer, created an outbreak of shark cartilage pills for the public to purchase to prevent cancer. Research has been done to disprove that statement; sharks do get cancer just at an exceedingly low rate compare to other species. Which prompts the government to ask a federal judge to stop sales of a popular brand of shark cartilage and two other alternative remedies; due to the fact that they are illegally claiming that their product can treat cancer where in fact they have no proof to back up their claim. Without proof, the government is worried that the public will be suckered into buying products, which won’t be helpful to their health and creates hope in something that isn’t there. Dr. Janet Woodcock believes that “People should not be misled into thinking bogus remedies are going to be effective. We have a very vulnerable population of cancer patients and their families out there that are really looking for hope. We are not going to let companies promote products that have not been adequately tested and are not shown to be effective.” Scientists have not yet conducted a comprehensive study of cancer rates among sharks, and currently available evidence does not allow them to assess the causes of the cancers they have found. The myth that sharks do not get cancer sprang up in part because of their isolation from humans, which reduces their exposure to carcinogenic pollutants and the likelihood that sharks with tumors will be caught. All of these factors went into the popularity of how sharks don’t get cancer. |
