Activities
Activities in Strandhill are plentiful, with surfing and golfing being the main ones. However there are many other things for the visitor to do including:
- A visit to Coney Island
- Aero plane instructions and trips
- A walk on the magical Glen road
- A hike up Knocknarea
- A trip to nearby megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore
- A weekend of craic at the Warriors Festival
Coney Island
This island can be reached at low tide along the strand where the way is marked by a line of pillars. Few people live on the island today, but there are several lovely beaches and a pub where you can grab a pint of the black stuff.
Airport
Sligo's airport is situated at Strandhill. Return flights daily to Dublin. The North West Aero Club is based at the airport. Flight instruction is available and trips of the area can also be made. Visit Sligo Airport for flight times and info.
Glen Road
This road runs parallel to the Glen, a natural fault in the bedrock that is of ecological interest.
Knocknarea
A climb to the top of Knocknarea is a rewarding experience with its views of Slieve League and Donegal to the North. On the summit is Queen Maeve's Cairn. Around the base are a number of tombs of the passage tomb type, similiar to that of Newgrange, Co. Meath.
Carrowmore
Carrowmore dates from the Stone-Age and is one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Western Europe. Up to forty tombs can be seen in various stages of preservation. In general the tombs consist of a large stone burial chamber with roof cap containing cremated bones and surrounded by a circle of large stones. The finds from the excavations are similar to from passage tombs from the Boyne Valley, County Meath, but possibly predate these.
Visit Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs for more information.
Warriors Run / Festival
The Warriors Run takes a gruelling route all the from the cannon at Strandhill up to the summit of Knocknarea to Meave herself and all the way back down. All in all it amounts to a 10 mile run in conditions that can often be treacherous. Needless to say the pain is offset by the sheer satisfaction of finishing the race and of course a much needed pint(s) of Guinness at The Strand.
Any information needed about the race itself or the Warriors Festival and events in general can be found at Warriors Festival. |
