A lot has changed for Warcraft III since Warcraft
II. There have tons of new additions and changes. One of the most
important one is the Hero unit. |
|
Heroes |
Each hero unit has their own name and personalities and in
the campaigns, they are a vital part of the storyline. There are 3 main
attributes for a hero: strength, intelligence and agility. These put
together make up the hero’s hit points, the amount of mana they have and
other stats. Each hero specializes at one of these 3 attributes. You
should find out which one your hero specializes at so you can upgrade them
in certain ways so they make good use of that specialty. Heroes gain
experience when they kill enemies which lets them gain levels, learn new
abilities and spells and improve their stats. You can also pick up items
and equip your heroes with them. Items increase your hero’s stats and
gives them special powers. Heroes are an important part of the games and
if used carefully, can help you easily defeat your opponents. |
A good way to gain experience is to attack
creeps. Creeps are neutral monsters that you can find on many places on
the map. Fighting the creeps lets your hero gain experience and pick up
items. Heroes are an important part of the games and if used carefully,
can help you easily defeat your opponents. |

Units |
Though heroes are very important to the game, the
many units of the game can’t be forgotten. Warcraft III allows only 90
units which doesn’t seem much compared to Starcraft’s 200 but a player
who can make full use of the units’ special abilities can usually take
out the enemy easily. You’ll need to create groups of units to be able
to succeed in a battle and minimize the amount of damage you receive. You
can assign a number to groups of up to 12 units by selecting them and
pressing CTRL + a number. Then you can select them anytime later by
pressing CTRL + the number you assigned. |
You’ll also need to memorize all the hotkeys. You won’t
get enough time during battle to use the mouse to select a spell or to
select units with the mouse. It can be useful outside battles also. For
example, using the space bar can take you to the location of the last
announcement (like the under attack warning). |
|
Towns |
Build your essential buildings as soon as you get
enough resources so you can make some units to defend your city incase of
an early attack from your opponent. You’ll need to learn the technology
tree. The technology tree is a series of buildings that you need to make
in combination before you can make some units. For example, you might not
be able to make a certain unit at your barracks until you have a
blacksmith. |
Another one of the many new features in Warcraft III is the
addition of upkeep. Upkeep is like paying taxes for the number of units
you have. When you have 0 to 40 units, you don’t need to pay upkeep.
This means that each trip to the gold mine by 1 villager gets you 10 gold.
When you go past 40 units, the villager still brings 10 gold per trip but
you only get 7. Once you go past 70 units, you get only 4 gold per trip.
So you shouldn’t go over 40 units until you’re uncovered most of the
map and made up a plan for how you’ll attack. |
Because of upkeep, you’ll need to always keep
expanding your territories. After fighting creeps, you should send a
villager to construct an expansion. You should have lots of villagers
gathering gold at the beginning of the game or you’ll be in trouble
later. |
