- September 9th, 2001 marked the 30th anniversary of the Attica prison
riots. For those who are not aware Attica prison is a maximum security
prison located in Attica, NY , between Rochester and Buffalo. The
riots ensued because the prisoners were upset regarding conditions of
the prison; including medical care, sanitation, etc. When their
demands were not met they uprose and overtook the prison taking
several guards and some civilian employees hostage.
-
- This took place when Governor Rockefeller was the governor of the
state. Rockefeller did not adhere to their requests during the riot
and this lead to the state police and other law enforcement teams
retaking the prison. During this time several inmates and guards were
killed or wounded. The Forgotten Victims of Attica is a group
that consists of family members of guards that were killed in the
riots and also surviving guards and civilians who were hostages. This
group was formed after the inmates received their settlement as the
guards now were the forgotten victims. They have never been
compensated for this tragedy. Come hear their compelling stories.
