Internships

The NYCLU Mentorship and Internship Program

We invite you to participate in the NYCLU mentoring program, Our program wishes to provide superior alternatives to other mentoring programs.... While some other mentoring programs may consist of very limited relationship with an attorney during a one-time lunch and never hearing from him or her again, our program encourages students to interact with attorneys in the community on a much more frequent and consistent basis. This program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to  e-mail or meet the attorney once a month or as mutually agreed, with issues, questions or concerns about school, the profession, the Bar examination, the practice, and others. The participating attorneys have also  agreed to invite the students to legal activities in which they participate such as trials and  jury selection.

We kick off the program with a mentoring reception, in which you will meet the assigned attorney. There is a wide selection of internships available in many areas of the  law. These may start out as a volunteer position but many lead to paying positions down the line. This ongoing relationship will be helpful in matters such as when you make a more informed decision about the type of Law and the geographical area in which you may want to practice, the type of firm you may want to work with (large, small, solo). It may also provide you with some valuable information about the current employment market for lawyers. The contacts you establish while in Law School will also be very helpful later, after you graduate, in finding employment opportunities, and in developing your career.

For in-school support, a student mentor, a peer, is also assigned in our program. You can establish with your peer a closer relationship in which you are invited to discuss experiences such as courses and professors, exam taking and programs of study.
