Joe
Torres is a former Claretian seminarian. His studies at the University
of Santo Tomas and the Loyola School of Theology have given him a deep
understanding of the plight of the marginalized sectors of Philippine society.
Leaving the seminary for journalism, he maintained his ties with the Catholic
Church through a stint with UCAN, an international news service run by
the Church. His following work for the alternative news service Philippine
News and Features (PNF) in the early '90s gave him the opportunity to bring
to light for the first time a new and more dangerous Muslim faction called
Abu Sayyaf. This earned Joe a fellowship for human rights of the United
Nations, the only Asian out of 18 journalists from all over the world.
He later found a receptive Filipino audience in the Middle East as editor
for the Saudi Gazette based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Torres’ return to the country enhanced the investigative capabilities of
Isyu.
He currently writes for the definitive weekly, The
Sunday Paper.
