DISCOVERY OF PENNICILIN

-Penicillin was discovered in 1928 by Sir Alexander Flemming (shown to the left) at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School.

-The discovery was made by accident in the course of his research on influenza.

-He noticed that a contaminant fungus (discovered to be the penicillum mold)  had killed a culture of bacteria and this led to the synthesis of the penicillin  antibiotic.

-Alexander Flemming would later go on to share his Nobel Prize with co-discoverers Sir Howard Walter and Earnst Borris Chain for their contributions to medical science.
