Henry Winfield Fraser was born November 14, 1848 in Mount Gilead, Montgomery County, NC, the son of William Fraser and Harriet Williams.
The picture on the right was taken about 1854. In the full size daguerreotype, he wears a kilt, high socks and carried some kind of a stick. The sash around his shoulder apears to be a narrow strip, perhaps knitted. There was damage to the photo, not the sash, on his shoulder. The sash continued around his waist. Notice the feather on the hat. The hat, shirt and kilt seem to be of a tartan, perhaps a Fraser tartan. I can email the whole photo to anyone who is interested, but here I wanted the closeup of his face.
His great grandfather was John "Cuffy" Fraser who was born in Scotland and served in the Revolutionary War.
Henry Fraser married Pandora Haworth May 15, 1881 and he outlived her twenty one years dying in Winter Haven, FL October 22,1941.
He lived most of his life in North Carolina. After the death of his wife, Pandora, he moved to Winter Haven Florida. There he opened a hardware and furniture store.
He was a deeply religious man and taught Sunday School most of his life.
I will have some information added here about the school that he
had helped start in Hiroshima, Japan about 1910 with some pictures and letters.
