A trail ride through beautiful woods
Trail rides

Wonderful four-legged friends are eager to give you and your family a great trail riding experience in the beautiful mountains at Stratton! Because John and Letitia want their guests and their horses to be as comfortable and safe as possible, every trail ride at Sun Bowl Ranch begins with a comprehensive instructional period. Before hitting the trail, experienced guides review the proper Western seat; demonstrate reining commands to turn, slow down, and stop; and go over trail tips and safety procedures. This lets riders and their mounts get acquainted, helps riders give gentle and understandable commands, and insures that riders of all levels will enjoy themselves safely.

Here are all the details:

Group rides (up to 20 riders): There's only one thing like seeing a long string of horses and riders wind their way along a wooded trail—being in one. Our group rides are walk rides with some trotting if the size and ability of the group permits. We always err on the side of caution; so if a guest is uncomfortable with trotting, the group stays at a walk. Two to three wranglers accompany each group.

Private rides (just your party): Our private rides are a real treat, for they give you the personalized attention of your own wrangler and let you customize the ride. You can get additional instruction, tour the mountain or the lower elevations, and do some trotting if you like.

1-hour trail ride 2-hour trail ride

This gives our guests a chance to explore Vermont's always - beautiful countryside on horseback. You'll meander among century-old stone walls, through towering forests, and beside sparkling streams.

Newly engaged couple: He popped the question on horseback at Sun Bowl!

This ride combines our scenic one-hour tour of the wooded countryside with a climb part of the way up Stratton Mountain. You'll pause in a mountainside meadow to take in the beautiful view. Be sure to bring your camera.

Well, we SAID it's a beautiful view

1¾-hour picnic ride: This ride combines our scenic one-hour countryside tour with a delightful break for lunch beside a mountain stream nestled in the woods. Your wranglers will break out a delicious meal prepared by a nearby gourmet deli. Afterwards, you can dip your toes in the stream and feed your horse a carrot treat (which comes with your lunch, of course).

Mid-Mountain Lodge Overnight rides

This trail ride is a true Vermont adventure. It starts with a 20-minute lesson that lets you get comfortable with your horse. Then you'll hit the trail. After 1¾ hours winding around the base and up the slope of beautiful Stratton Mountain, you'll reach the secluded Mid-Mountain Lodge, which affords spectacular views and comfortable accommodations. There's no roughin' it on this trip unless you insist. Die-hard campers who love the night air can sleep outdoors - tents are provided! If you prefer civilization, you can sleep indoors on comfy air mattresses with sheets and pillows. All you need to bring is a change of clothes, a toothbrush, and a camera to record the good times.

Inside Mid-Mountain Lodge

Be ready for fun once you reach the Lodge. You can play volleyball or try your hand at (what else?) horseshoes. If you'd like to pitch in with brushing and feeding your horse, the wranglers will be glad to show you how. Or you can kick back and relax. Whatever you choose, you'll be ready for a mouth-watering meal of steak or chicken with all the fixin's: baked beans, baked potato, fresh corn on the cob, garden salad, and hot rolls. Later you can toast marshmallows over the campfire and make s'mores—MMM, good!

Where's my harmonica? Falling leaves and a placid stream

After a restful night, you'll get another taste of cowboy life when you rise early and have a hearty breakfast that will leave you full till dinner time. An hour ride back down the mountain as the wildlife awakens will let you enjoy the peace and beauty found only in the morning woods.

An overnight ride is a unique experience that you'll treasure for a lifetime. It's a great corporate retreat, a blast for a group of friends, a fun family outing, and the perfect romantic getaway for couples. Includes dinner, breakfast, and three hours of riding.
