This album was the first release of Beatles new material since 1977, and also the first release of unreleased songs since the breakup in 1970.
As the title says, this double album brings many songs recorded for broadcast by BBC, in which the band played live, without overdubs or studio tricks (only a crude edit for A Hard Day's Night solo, "as no-one could reproduce what George Martin had played"). It gives a portrait of how the Beatles programs were, featuring MANY unreleased cover songs (..), one unreleased Lennon-McCartney track (I'll Be On My Way) and also ... well known songs from the Beatles already-issued repertoire.
To make this compilation, EMI made an agreement with BBC to get the
rights of commercial issue, and an extensive research was performed in
the BBC's vaults in order to recover the recordings.
However, BBC didn't have all. So the researchers had to obtain recordings
from several sources, including bootleg records, tape copies from lost
BBC records, and even tapes recorded off radio during broadcast by fans,
with poor quality, but important historic significance.
Once remastered, the songs were assembled together, slightly crossfaded and with speeches in between, in order to sound like a radio program.
However, the song order doesn't follow any chronological order and this
way we travel from November 1964 (tracks 18-21 on Disc 2), to May 1965
(tracks 22-23) then back to August 1963 (tracks 22-23)! Tracks recorded
in the studio are mixed with others performed before an audience. Also,
as the sound quality is unsteady (due to the several fonts the tracks were
taken from) sometimes a poor quality track appears among others with better
sound (see Keep Your Hands Off My Baby). And crossfades, although
most of the times subtle, seem to spoil tracks that aren't available anywhere.
Some times there are even audience screams running from a song performed
before an audience into another in the studio!
Another complaint: despite of the many speeches, there are some talk
from the show commented on the sleeve notes that doesn't
appear on the record.
In Brazil, the first issues were imported as a whole, but after a few months, only the discs were still imported, being the package made in Brazil. This Brazilian package has less quality than the original (all printing seems a bit faded) and has Brazilian credits on the back cover, despite the records being made in Europe.
